Is this a cat that usually goes to the toilet outside, or use a litter tray? If using a litter tray, make sure it's clean, as if it's wet to touch, the cat will go elsewhere to poop as it doesn't like the wet on it's paws. The best thing to do, which is what I did, as mine kept doing this, at the back of the tele. Is to clean the area really well, you need to remember the poop is going through your carpet to whatever is underneath, so that needs a good clean too. You want to get rid of their scent. Then, spray the area he/she poops and the wider area around it with a citric spray. (you can get this from any pet shop) You may solve this, but you need to find out why he/she is going there. If it's a litter tray being used, I know it sounds silly, but cats like to go to the toilet in private. If you have the tray where they can be seen constantly, they won't go in it, specially if there's strangers around. That's maybe why he/she's going behind the couch as it's more private. Without knowing how old the cat is, and whether it's an inside or outside cat, and the situation, like have you got visitors, have you got any other animals etc... it's hard to pinpoint why it's happening. After cleaning and spraying the area, keep an eye to make sure he/she doesn't do it anywhere else. If he/she does, either pick straight up and put out, or into litter tray and try and teach the cat it's wrong. Easier said than done, I know, but good luck.

Clean the area well, using Natures Miricle pet stain cleaner. Next, make sure the litter box is always clean and always in the same place in your house. Also, do you have something or someone new living with you? Cats hate change, and can express their displeasure with a new house guest or a new sofa by pooping or peeing somewhere other than their box. If the cat doesn't stop doing this, call your vet and have him checked out. If he is perfectly healthy otherwise, you can ask your vet about options (like medication, etc) to curb his pooping in the house. Good luck!

Yeah it smells because the cat has gone there before. You need to get some Nature's Miracle and SOAK the area and then use towels to draw up the liquid.
This is an enzyme cleaner so it will totally get rid of the smell in about 2 weeks - in that time I would keep the cat in a confined space out of the area that they normally go in - keep the litter box cleaned out every day - so the cat gets used to going in the litter box again.

How old is the cat? How many other cats/animals do you have? How often do you change the box(es)? When was the last time you took him to the vet? Are there any other issues/symptoms/changes in his life? Why are you putting him in the box instead of letting him find it on his own? What's been up with him lately?

Many cats dislike the feel of tin foil (especially if they have not been declawed). When we want to keep the cats away from a particular place, we often line or cover it with tin foil. After a couple of weeks, the cats stop trying to go there, and we remove the foil.

Use the cleaners to get the stains and smell out of the carpet, but the main thing is to block off the access to behind the couch - if Puss can't get back there, he/she can't poop there!

Sorta dumb, but you could fill up the space somehow--crumpled newspapers? That or block off both ends with a barrier.

You can get this stuff called "Resolve". You spray it where your pet is pooping and/or peeing and it makes them stay away from it.

I like to spray straight vinegar on anything that you do not want your cat doing or scratching or peeing on,
