Because they are more all around athletes. Kicking, for example, requires more athleticism.

Punching power is everything to a boxer. It's pretty hard to hurt someone when you're wearing full-size boxing gloves, so boxers must train to maximize their upper body strength.

MMA fighters have a lot more skills to master compared to boxers. They have to be competent at boxing, mui thai, wrestling, and jujitsu to compete today. Plus they have to have more endurance than a boxer, since kicking and grappling use more energy than just punching, and since they go 5 minute rounds. Between all the skills training and cardio they have to do, they don't have as much time to devote to weight training as boxers do.

That said, some mma fighters do lift quite a bit and are incredibly strong. Others (like Rashad Evans or Diego Sanchez) would probably benefit from more weight training and could stand to bulk up a bit.

Boxing has better physical trainng methods as of now. I would love to see some of the great physical specimens learn some ground work and try their hats in the UFC. I heard Shannon Briggs is going to give it a try, it should be interesting if he puts some good effort into it. He could easily pick up what Chuck Liddell did in his prime, with his strong punches. Maybe not easily, but with the amount of trainng he does, fairly easily.

Have you seen the legs of a pro boxer lately? That is the question.
