Yes you can paint over pine.I would give it a good coat of undercoating/primer first and then paint with whatever type of paint you're using.
Washing it down first with TSP will get rid of any grease/dirt on the woodwork.
TSP is a cleaning powder you mix with water for jobs such as this and works well.Get it at any hardware or paint supply store.
About the knots showing through. Before applying the primer, shellac over the knots so they don't end up coming through.I usually give them two coats of shellac.Just follow instructions on the can as far as drying etc. goes.

oil based primer. It stinks and it is hard to clean up but it covers those old pine boards. I have 50+ year old moulding and it was the only thing that covered it. I would suggest 2 coats of a semi gloss trim paint from a Paint store (not a box store) That will do the trick. good luck. and when you are done come on over I have more to get done on my house.

If you are going to put paint on pine woodwork you will need to prime it first before painting. If you are just giving it another clear gloss so that the pine wood will be visable you will not need to prime. Just clear gloss it again after rubbing it with 0000 steel wool or fine sandpaper. Use a tack cloth and then you are ready to clear gloss.

Hello, my dad paints so he says that you can paint over it, but make sure you paint it a few times because over time depending on the wood the knots will show and make the walls look very ugly. Personally, I would would leave it depending on how bad it looks! Good Luck and I hope this helps!

You need to wash it down, let it dry, sand it a little, undercoat it, let that dry, second layer of undercoat if needed then paint with EXPENSIVE gloss.
Hope it looks cool for you !
