I am new to photography and I was thinking of getting a Nikon D80. Do you think that would be a good camera for an unexperienced photographer? What do you suggest?

Thanks!

There aren't any good classes where I live and I already have photography books.

IMO you should first take a couple of photography classes.Learn the basics of light, ISO, shutter speed and aperture (aka f-stop). Learn the "Rules of Composition" and how to use them. Spend a year shooting film during your class. Decide what kind of photography you enjoy the most. Then choose a new camera. After all, would you buy a new car if you couldn't drive?

Suggest you try the one model below that -- either the Nikon D40 or D40x, and with the money saved, add a speedlight (with bounce flash head), extra lens and a good photography book (suggest "Understanding Exposure: How to Shoot Great Photographs with a Film or Digital Camera" by Bryan Peterson).

Have fun with your new digital camera!

Dear Factory Girl,
I don´t know the D70 but I would recommend the Canon G7 as its easy to carry around a compact camera you can attach a wide angle and telephoto if you require. It has 10 million pixel
resolution and an optical zoom of 6 so combined you have x24. It has anti shake, macro and the latest light receptor plate
Let me know how you get on as i am looking to buy cameras for my students at school

I am a Canon girl myself and really detest Nikons... maybe look at the Canon Rebel. You can probably pick an older version (which are great for beginners) pretty cheap since they came out with the Canon Rebel XTi.
Whatever you choose, good luck with your photography!
