I know the traditional is to use refried beans for the first layer, but I have always used bean dip (the canned stuff they sell newar the chips!). I buy a regular and a spicy, then mix the 2. It adds a nice zip to the dip and the bean dip is a little creamier than refried beans.
Then top with layers as follows:
Guacamole
Sour cream
chopped green onions
chopped tomatoes
shredded cheddar cheese
shredded lettuce
I have also poured salsa over the top. Stopped using black olives on it because I don't like the flavor after it sits for a while in the fridge.

This is my mother's recipe for Seven-Layer Dip and everyone loves it - plus it's very simple:
1st layer - 1 can Jalipeno bean dip
2nd layer - 2 avocadoes mashed with a little lemon juice
3rd layer - Combine 2 T sour cream, 3 T mayonnaise and 1/2 pkg Taco mix
4th layer - 1 cup each of Cheddar and Jack cheese
5th layer - 3 Roma tomatoes - diced
6th layer - 3 green onions chopped fine
7th layer - 1 can chopped ripe olives
Cover with saran and refrigerate. Can be made the day before. (Since there's no lettuce in it - nothing gets wilted)
