Oh, please people!!!

Nobody is going to eat your dog.

Yes, in some part people eat dogs, but that doesn't mean that they will take your dog and kill him!
You should check with the hotel or airline.

Ignore all these people who are saying they'll eat him. They won't, they all made me nervous too when I was considering bringing my dog. I brought a shih tzu with me, and technically you're supposed to declare him when you get there and put him into quarentine for 7 days then do a 21 day quarantine at home, or you can just do what I did, I brought him on the flight with me and walked through customs with him in the bag and never declared him. No one even gave me a second glance. Make sure he has all the proper shots and forms before you go in case they DO stop you. Your vet should be able to get you an international health certificate, there are certain shots he must have within 14 days of departure and he must have a rabies shot more than 30 days before departure but not more than a year. they do not recongnize 3 year rabies shots. And if they do stop you, you can probably just bribe the guy, that was my plan, not matter how modern china tries to be you must remember that really it's still a 3rd world country with a pretty cover on it, bribes can alway be made.

People love dogs here, they're a little afraid of them, because they haven't been commonly kept as pets for a lot of people here until recently, so people can be a little nervous, but for the most part everyone seems happy to see him and want to pet him. I also know in Shanghai and Beijing your pet MUST be registered in you live inside certain rings, so just look up the rules.

It can be done, just take the necessary precautions. Good luck! Email me if you have any questions, buckeyemeg@gmail.com

If I'm remembering this correctly, there was a town in China that a few dogs that ended up with rabies. Instead of letting the owners in the city get there dogs shots, the town decided that all dogs be euthenized. I read about this in the last 2 years. I read this on MSn's front page.

I live in Beijing, and see lots of people with dogs. The Chinese dote on their dogs, just as they do on their children. Your biggest problem in bringing your dog with you will be the quarantine requirements. You need to check into both the Chinese government requirements on quarantining the dog on the way into China, and also on your home country's quarantine regulations on bringing the dog back home from China. Most people I've talked to have concluded that it's not worth the hassle.
Good luck, and enjoy your trip.

alot of people have dogs in china as pets.. i thinkif you are taking care of your pet.. it should be fine.. just needs to settle in new envirnment....most places are easy with imported pets... just need to quarantine at home for a few weeks... but if you leave...depends on individual country's quarantine regualtions.. some are more than 4 months if your pet is coming from china.....which city are you going to...?
is your dog a pure bred Maltese? I am actually looking for one but haven't been able to find one in china or HK..
check with the airline and local authorities.
