I cut my hair into shorter layers than I would have liked to try and rid myself of my bad split end problems from a bad highlighting job last year. I have cut off at least 3 inches and my layers are short and I can't stand it. Despite this I still have some split ends. Despite shaving my head, what can I do?

All women get split ends ...there is even a fancy name for them: trichoptlosis

They happen to your hair when the cuticle which protects your hair has been removed from the very end of your hair. Split ends develop in dry, brittle hair. The cause of damage most often is due to overly aggressive drying or over brushing with the wrong type of hair brush.

The hair cuticle cannot be replaced once it is damaged or removed. It cannot be replaired. Most often the hair splits and forms two or three strands. These strands can be several inches in length. The only way to deal with hair that is split, is to cut off the damaged section.

Top ten Causes of Split ends:
Excessive use of hot styling tools
Overuse of chemical treatments
Use of inferior styling tools that rip or snag hair
Environmental damage from heat, cold, wind and other climate issues.
Lack of routine maintenance such as regular trimming.
Improper detangling techniques.
Overwashing.
Use of inferior hair care products.
Excessive use of styling products such as gels, waxes and sprays.
Trimming with inferior scissors.

The best thing to do is prevent FUTURE split ends. An once of prevention is worth a pound of cure! HEre is a few ways not to get them in the first place:

Don't brush hair when it's wet, because that's when it is at its most vulnerable.

Cool it on the heat styling tricks. That means cut down on hair dryers, straightening irons, crimpers, curling irons and hot curlers.

Buy a natural-bristle brush that won't pull on hair and ultimately break it off, thereby causing a possible split end.

Use a shampoo that lists sunscreen as a major ingredient

Condition after shampooing, and use a deep conditioner once a month

Try a hair split repair product.

Use a professional shampoo and conditioner. Get regular trims. You probably still have some damaged hair left, even after your haircut. You will just have to keep getting your hair trimmed every 6-8 weeks. It is not that bad. In 8 weeks, your hair grows on average, an inch, so get a 1/4 inch taken off, and you are growing out your hair from the too short layers, and trimming off the broken damaged stuff.

Split ends? What causes them? The biggest cause is high heat setting on curling iron, High Heat on blow dryer and over brushing.
You should always use the lowest setting possible on a hiar dryer to dry your hair, the idea is to towel dry you hair as much as you can, then use a low heat. I know it take a long time, but it doesn't cause damage to the hair.
Also curling irons, lower settings, if you need to use a atomizing bottle to lightly dampen hair before curling, this will cause a better curl and not damage the hair.
The Hair brush was the worst invention, it lets people put excess pressure on the hair, pulls unevenly and this with repeated brushing causes split ends.
You can get a good herbal shampoo that will help rebuild the hair, but reduce the top three and you will have your best look!

Sounds like you went too long without a trim...and since your split ends weren't cut off, they kept splitting further and further up your hair...sounds like you don't like your length, so i wouldn't get a lot more off right now, just make sure you get a trim at least every six week.....also, i dye my hair, and though it's in pretty good condition...my ends are dry...i do have trims on a regular basis...anyway, i went to sally's beauty supply and bought the ion shampoo, conditioner for color treated hair...it brought a lot of shine out in my hair...also...try the silk drops put out by ion....or you can buy it at wallmart etc...may even be a larger bottle...different brand...which is more reasonable...anyway...take a few drops...rub it between your hands and put it evenly through your hair...i don't put it on my scalp, but focus on the midlength and the ends...i swear by it...and it gives your hair a lot of shine...

Take sections of your hair and twist the hair. The split ends will stand out from the twisted hair. You will easily be able to see the split ends and trim only where needed.

Use a high end shampoo, like Matrix, or Biolage... Also prenatal pills will help you grow your hair out. Lots of girls take them for that reason, and it helps your nails grow too.

have you been conditioning and moisturizing? that will help prevent spliting and breaking, cutting alone will only remove what's currently damaged at the ends.
