Hi I broke my back when I was 15 and had 2 slipped discs at L4 and L5. To begin with I went through physio and was on only advil. I have a very high pain tolerance so that was all I needed. In my case, within a couple of weeks of physio my pain level was decreased immensely because of the activation of the core back muscles. You might find that what your doctor gives you for pain advice may be over or understated. If I were you, I would wait until I had done 2 weeks of physio and then reevaluate what my pain control needs are. Whatever you do, do not take so many pain killers that the pain is gone completely, because this will give you a fake sense of ability, and you will do more damage by over working your back. Good luck!

BEen there & done that. Broke my back in 7 places and neck in 2 places. Guess what? I can now walk, ride bumper cars at amusement parks, wreslle with grandkids. I broke all this back 20 years ago. Best pain meds? don't laugh... Jigsaw puzzles and crossword puzzles and laughter. Uh huh! Working the puzzles relax the mind & body into a deep relaxation that tense muscles are not tense anymore and the pain gets to a very tolerable, barely noticable level. Relaxation and laughter let your body create natural endorphins which is your own natural pain killer. I was on viconin and diladed morphine for 4 years & weaned off of it over 1 week by starting puzzles. Sounds nuts but trust me it works!! No one even has to know you are doing puzzles if they are small & in your bedroom.

I don't like the idea of your starting such heavy narcotics. I know that your pain medication isn't working for you completely, but once you start narcotics it is almost impossible to come off of them because you're going to experience more pain.
Do the physical therapy and see how you feel afterwards Before you agree to the medical drugs. I would also recommend you get secondary opinions on treatment from an acupuncturist and chiropractor. Both of these professionals can offer relief without drugs.

Hope this will help you a bit!……….advice on back pain because, not only does it tell you to put your back to rest, but it tells you how to rest it and why. Immediately after the onset of severe, acute, pain or as soon as realistically possible, put the involved spinal segment into the position shown in the adjacent photograph. A simple rule of thumb would be to put the affected spinal segment in the most comfortable DYNAMIC POSITION. Figure 1 shows a generically stable position for most spinal pain especially the Cervical and Lumbar region. It is easily adopted by anyone who has a couch with cushions that can be moved. However, the same arrangement can be made on the floor or bed with enough pillows. Note that most of the weight is taken off of the spine by the slight reclining pose. Letting your spine assume a comfortable, slightly bent backwards position at the site of the worse pain, intentionally re-creates all the natural lordotic (concave) curves of the spine. The disc units in pain are supported and unweighted by selective positioning of pillows and cushions that put the spinal segment in an ideal DYNAMIC POSITION. The pillows provide support to unload the discs. For discogenic pain (pain originating in the discs) taking the weight off of the damaged areas of the spine takes away some of the pain; so, if this positioning gives you immediate pain relief while you are in the position, your pain is probably originating in the discs. Notice that the hips are between the separated seat cushions because this allows them to partially hang. Of course, this position can, and should, be modified slightly to accommodate the exact site of pain, and the degree to which your area of pain is bent backwards or the amount of hanging you do needs to be adjusted to your particular body habitus. If you are bent too far backwards or hang too much, the pain might not be relieved.
Hallo Elizabeth P. I am so sorry to here your are having so much pain with your back. I never had much trouble with my back. Wish I could help you more! So I hope this bit of info will help you a bit. I do wish you well real soon.
Love.. Skycat xx

Have you thought of Quantum Healing. I had pain in my neck. arms and hands for 20 years +. 3 sessions of Quantum Touch 4 or 5 months ago and I have no pain whatsoever.
Look up "Quantum Touch - the power to heal" on the net. It puts bones back into place in one session, it is the most amazing treatment I have ever had, and it works. If you need more info. please email me.
