(I'm a female) I'll like to start off telling, I have a bump on my nose that's only viewable from the right side of my face. When I ask people what ressemblance I have with my dad, they tell me "your nose". I've been told by many people that I'm beautiful, but I don't think I'm all that. (I have cat eyes and silky long hair, maybe that drags the attention.)
When I look at the right side of my face in the mirror, it doesn't look bad, I don't notice the bump that much. But when I take pic from that angle, it mostly looks awful to me (except in one or 2 pics). Or even in a video, *sometimes* that side looks bad to me, Why?!
Some people don't look diff in pictures (like Utada Hikaru? or maybe celebrities just wear too much make-up to look photogenic), but why do some do look diff?

All these answers are right. You see yourself differently than others do. I've looked at pictures of myself and thought the were not so great but others say they looked good.
The lighting effect plays a huge part in how photos come out. The light is catching that bump when you're shot from that side so it emphasizes it.
The 2-D, 3-D thing is absolutely true also. In 3-D, you can see the dimensions. In 2-D you're stuck with a flat viewing.
The angle you're being shot makes a big difference also. It's possible to take a picture from the side with the bump at a good angle and have be less noticeable.
Hope I helped.
Also, you can't compare your photos to those of celebrities. Not only do they use lots of make-up to hide flaws, the photographers use photoshop, airbrushing and things like that to fix the flaws. Just look at the photos that are taken when they are on the street being themselvs. Everyone has flaws.

I think that's a pretty good question. I think that some people seem to look different in photos than in real life because of the way they carry themselves. The same way some people make better photo models and some people make better runway models. Personality has a lot to do with our perception of someone. And no matter how attractive someone is, they just might not be very photogenic but sometimes the opposite is true. The camera loves some faces even though they don't seem that attractive in person. : )

In use to wonder the samething. Some people are photogenic and some are not. There are lots of models that photograph better then the look in real life ( with or without hair and make-up) I happen to be one of those un photogenic people. Which does not take away my real beauty. It has to do with bone structure and the way the light in photo hits your face. It is not a true reperesentation of you or your beauty.

It depends what angle you are taking the picture as well. Some people think when you have the angle looking downwards towards you it makes a better picture. Most girls wear alot of make up to cover up. Make up sometimes makes a huge difference. Utada Hikaru wears make up and most likelt gets her photos airbrushed as well.

A picture is like a mirror... it tells no lies and hides no flaws. The reason why you think you look different in pictures because your minds eye tells you how you think you look. Now... celebs have the luxury of makeup artists, hair stylists... and one the picture is taken... air brushing... they are not as perfect/beautiful as they look. The important thing to remember is that you are only as beautiful as the person you are on the inside. Im sure you are very beautiful in every way... so dont worry about a few bad pictures... we all take them.

It has to do with dimensional perception attributes. Your eyes perceive two dimensions differently than 3. That is why some people are photogenic and others are not. Their facial characteristics are more aesthetic in the 2 dimensional realm of photography.

pictures are still and have no personality, so one can see you the way you look just from looks. it's like when you first see an ugly person and you think there is nothing that could make them prettier. then you get to know that person and he/she's really nice. this makes the person literally look different to the eyes of the beholder. but then again, maybe this is not the case here. it could just simply be that you are not as photogenic(meaning you don't look good in pictures) as others. for example, my sister is so beautiful in person, but in pictures, she looks so bad! she's just not phoogenic. so probably both of these cases are yours, but it's nothing to get shook up about. lots of people look bad in pictures.

I think that when one looks in the mirror one has a different perception of oneself while the camera shows how it is. But if the picture is taken with a flash all irregularities are super imposed and that's why we think we look different in pictures.
And don't forget, you are your worst critic and see every flaw while someone else may think that you look really great in that particular photograph.

Photography is based upon lighting. In day to day life we see people in different lighting, but a photo is usually one of someone in a somewhat bright light which allows for more imperfections to be seen. Also, it gets quite awkward to stare at a real person for more than a few seconds, but you can stare at a photograph and notice things you wouldn't normally notice in real life.
As for why celebrities look different, one word: Photoshop
