I have discussions with different walks of people all the time, whether it be here on Yahoo answer or out in the world. We could be having a great conversation and time of fellowship until the issue of religion comes up. This usually starts arguments, and sometimes cursing. This happends with ALL RELIGIONS. Even here on Yahoo answers, the people in the other catagories seem not to argue back and forth. When I read responses in the religion category, people do nothing but argue back and forth and call each other's belief stupid when no one has ever met any of the forerunners in their faith. Religion is designed for peace and unity. All I see are people arguing, killing, and hating each other. What can we do to solve this problem? Whether we like it or not, we all have to live on this planet. Might as well live peacefully!!!!
P.S.
Before someone says it, moving to another planet is not the answer (l.o.l.)!!!

Well, It's horrible if you start cursing does it help anything? Of course not. It is a time for debate which some do not take seriously. There is an essence of everything. Something that makes things what they are. In the realm of religion, the essence of each individual religion is important. Sadly, not all religions are designed for peace. A few believe in global domination. Islam for example won't rest until they have ruled the world. Islam means to surrender to God (Allah). The core of what they believe rests on the idea that the kingdom of God will happen on earth. Thus, whether by Holy Jihad or multiplicative domination they demand a take over. (Muslims have considerably higher fertility than any other religious group. Muslim women have a TFR of 4.4) A few groups say this is not true for the less radical, but their last prophet Mohammed's later revelations more focused on takeover. As his revelations came, Muhammad established his political and religious authority. His revelation began to justify his wars against the meccans. This seems to be proof that not all religions are truly peaceful.

I think you made a wonderful point...religion is designed for peace and unity! The only way I could think of resolving this issue is people need to come to the realization that their religion doesn't dominate others or they shouldn't force their religion onto other groups...I've seen it happen. They should be happy for other religion if it's to teach them peace and unity towards everyone else.

I believe that a religion should help toward the goal of working in co-operation with all religions of the world. So, it should help us to recognise and respect the life of each one of us. I do not know all religions but I know one that aims to do just that and it is the Buddhism of Nichiren Daishonin, an association in modern times called SGI, that follows this way of thinking.
It is the only philosophy of life (there might be others) that I know of, whose aim is really this, the happiness of each individual since everyone is a "Buddha" once our wisdom is revealed.
Buddha means really just this, a normal everyday person that has the potential to dissipate his/her own ego and change their circumstances (karma) considering also all others in society since we reveal our potential in all spheres of life.

No matter what is anyone's belief, if we come to grasp the nature of our own life (and this Buddhism has a very practical way to help us realise it) and recognise that we all have infinite wisdom inside ourselves and respect our lives so we'll naturally see that in other people's lives and this mutual respect is a crucial step to build on tolerance. I chose this way because it works with these modern times for me and it is a religion/philosophy approachable to all and based on the happiness of all people.

There is such a thing as truth and error, and we live in an age where people reject such absolutes. Contrary to your claim that the purpose of religion is designed for peace and unity, it is actually man's feeble attempt in reaching God. Biblical Christianity is God's way of reaching man. Many religions make false claims, and their adherents simply accept them. People are loyal to their traditions, and nowhere is this more evident than when it comes to the subject of religion. Everyone likes to believe that they are in possession of the truth, and they try to defend it as best they can. Unfortunately, many are only defending human traditions, and man-centered theologies. All are blind, none can see, and only God can open an individuals eyes to the Truth.

You asked, What can we do about this problem?

The answer is simply starts with you and me. We have to demonstrate love and respect for all people. I am a Christian. I am proud to be a Christian.

I do many times disagree with people on Y!A as you could expect. Yet I do my best to show respect and engage in a discussion and not an argument. I do not kill or hate anybody.

I think everyone on R&S no matter what their religoius conviction is should be repectful. The only way we can do anything about this is that we oursleves are respectful. We have to take responsibility for our own actions. We can encourage people to follow likewise but we can not make them follow likewise.

You said that people "do nothing" but argue etc etc, I see people doing such things but I also see people engaging in genuine respectful discussion. I encourage to see my replies as just one example

I have no idea. As for me, though (an agnostic), I would not bother Christians if they would not bother me. I CONSTANTLY get flak from them, and hate mail.

I've never been bothered by muslims, jews, hindus, buddhists, etc.. so I'm perfectly fine with them as long as they are peaceful and don't try to force their views on me.

I would love for all religions to co-exist in peace but it's not possible, unfortunately. Actually, I would prefer no religion at all but I know that won't happen either.

The scriptures tell us that the heart of man is evil and desperately wicked. You will not see peace on this earth until the Lord Jesus returns to set up His 1000 year reign on earth. We as Christians are to strive for peaceful living but knowing we are in a minority we will still see war, hate etc. till He comes. Shalom

I tell people I am a Christian. Because its very broad.
I could be catholic, baptist, methodist or whatever.

People just want to say "your wrong" and give no meaning as to why.
So dont ever ask those people to join a debate team.

If someone knows that facts about the other side, as well. Then I would listen to them. But if they no nothing about how I think or what I believe, and they just start ranting about how I am wrong. I dont listen to that crap.

the answer is for people to start practicing their faith instead of talking about it. as long as there are still people in the world who are hungry, sick, cold, lonely, oppressed, etc then religious people have better things to do than sit around arguing about everything.

yeah, world peace seems to be the perfect solution to all our problems..unfortunately it is unattainable at the moment..but then again, it does not hurt to have faith..

i know this is kinda cheesy but from the movie "evan almighty", one of their key messages was that a random act of kindness can change the world..corny but true... ;)
