I was wondering if anyone knew if it is safe to travel with newborn puppies. They are 9 days old and my father just passed away and I have to go home for the furneal. I dont have anyone to watch my dog and her puppies while I am gone so I was wondering how safe it is to travel with them and any tips anyone can give me for the trip so that the dog and puppies are safe and okay. I dont want anything to happen to the puppies or mother so can anyone give me any ideas on what to do.

I've done it. Before when I had puppies I would take them to work every day. But my girls are very stable mentally and the travel doesn't bother them. If your b*tch is upset by travelling or new things, it might be better to leave her at home and hire a sitter.

First of all, depending on the size of your dog and the size of your car, and the length of the trip, you may want to crate the b*tch and puppies separately if there is a chance of her lying on them and crushing them. If the trip is longer than a few hours, you will need to stop and let her nurse them.

I always keep the car very warm when I am transporting puppies.

Of course, keep the mother and pups away from ALL other animals.

Can you bring your whelping box along? If not you should pick up something suitable at your destination (for dogs my size I use a kiddie wading pool, for smaller dogs the bottom half of a vari-kennel type crate would probably do). To make her feel more secure, you'd probably want to surround it with an ex-pen with some blankets over the sides and/or top, so she has a bit of a den.

Stay with her as much as possible.

Travel With Newborn

I had to travel with 10 two day old pups, and I put the pups in a laundry basket in the back seat. The trip was not long, so you may want to consider a crate. It is up to you whether or not to separate the mom and pups. This may depend on the length of the trip, and whether you want to make any pit stops for nursing. The most important thing is maintaining a constant temperature, so that the pups do not get overly hot or cold. Make sure you bring plenty of replacement bedding (ie Newspaper) so you won't be a burden with washing poopy towels at who ever's house you will be staying at. If you are staying at a hotel, let them know ahead of time. The last thing you want is to arrive and then be left out on the street because they won't allow that many dogs (yes, it sounds silly that they'll allow 2 or more grown dogs, but not a litter of pups!) Condition momma to using a valve-type water bottle (dripless) if you can, so that she can have a non-messy method to hydrate herself. I am sorry that your joy over the puppies was tempered by the loss of your father, and I hope that their snuggles and licks will help to ease your pain on your journey and in the future.

PS.. some dogs don't take kindly to strangers or their dogs.. I know my momma pittie was okay with people while I was around, but not if I left, but she would not tolorate ANY strange dogs until the pups were around 12 weeks old. So, make sure you take this into consideration, and try to keep handling by other people to a minimum to prevent the spread of disease.

Unless you can find someone fast to watch over the mother and the pups, I suggest you cancel your trip, as sad as that may be. It is crucial that you aid in the delivery of these pups, as all sorts of things can go wrong. I will assume you have experience here, so I won't go into that. But if you lack experience, please do some research fast! The mother needs to know and strongly trust the person assisting her with the delivery. If she does not, she may even bite! And newborns should not be moved from their mother for a while. Unlike humans, pups are born in a late fetus stage. Their brains, eyes, hearing, nervous system, etc. are still developing. Unlike animals that are born and are walking within minutes, pups need more time. So moving them around at such a young age can be unsafe for them and the mother. You want a safe, secure, stable spot. If this were 3-4 weeks after they were born, I'd say you'd be fine to travel with them, but not as newborns. Therefore, send your apologies to your father (if that's who you hope to see) but tell him he's going to be a "grandfather" of sorts. :-) I'm sure he'll understand if you wait until July to see him. Heck, he might even enjoy playing with the pups then (before you start to give them away, at about 7-8 weeks of age). Good luck!

Yup, I would think it is fine. The number one most important thing is to have a nice roomy, well padded crate. I am not sure whether it would be better to have mama with them as you travel, or in her own crate (so she doesn't accidentally crush the pups). I would talk to your vet about it. As long as you make sure they have a nice quiet place to rest while you are dealing with family committments, you should be fine. Be sure and take plenty of food for the mama as she is nursing. My condolences on your loss.

The most important thing is to crate them all for sure. It is the safest way to travel with animals.

As long as you keep them cool/warm and comfortable it is fine. Are you putting them in a crate or a box? Whatever you choose, make sure mom is comfortable and able to care for babies. And make sure to have enough water and food. Mom needs lots of water to make milk.

I am so sorry about your Dad. I am especially sorry you have to travel in such circumstances.

They should be fine as long as they have mom with them. Just make sure to have a comfy crate for mom and pups.
I am sorry for you loss.

Ive had them transported to me from shelters everywhere even younger.

However; I bet your vet you had their check up with would board them for you for just the cost of mom.
