Injuries are sad, no question. Where illegals are not covered by workers comp, but worked pretending they were legal, their not being covered seems a bit like their own fault, though. Here, it seems out of line because of the following quote:
"On the day of a scheduled hearing, however, immigration agents arrested Velásquez outside the J. Joseph Garrahy Judicial Complex in Providence. According to Velásquez, Gorman was standing nearby and called out, ‘Now Edgar, I’m sending you back to Mexico — I have no use for you now,’ and said, ‘Edgar, adios,’ as agents placed Velásquez in handcuffs. "
Read that once, then read it again and imagine an employer standing in front of a courthouse full of police and attorneys and judges and yelling that out.
Realistic?

Being a compassionate HUMAN I say it is too bad he got hurt, yes. Some have said he wouldn't have gotten hurt had he not been here illegally. That is not necessarily true because you don't know where he would have been working if he had been legal. In the end, I hope the EMPLOYER of this man is the one who loses the most. They should NOT have hired an illegal man to begin with. I DO hope the man wins his case against them because maybe it will be a financial burden to them and will wake them up and get them to stop hiring illegals.

Yes. THis is one of the reason I'm against illegal immigrants. The ease of employers to exploit illegals are so great. I hope the owner get's jail time. Does anyone here ahve a problem putting him in prison for knowingly hiring an illegal immigrant?
The main reason employers prefer illegals is because of legal reasons. They are less likely to sue. Employers ave alot of money from not properly insuring them. I'm not sure for Rhode Island, but in California, employers still need to make sure their subcontractors are properly insured as well. I also want to note that employers like illegals because if they give their boss trouble, the employer just call immigration to deport them. That's what the landscaper did in this case. I find it intersting that when we see an illegal immigrant, ICE does nothing, but if an employer calls like this case, they actually pick the guy up.

It's sad. The moral of the story is don't hire illegals. I hope employers are learning from this situation. Just because you hire an illegal for low wages and don't pay insurance, doesn't mean that you get off easy. I hope the employer goes down.

If he would have followed the rules, he would have had this resolved a long time ago. But he decided to break the law, the owner of the business broke the law, why would either one of them think this was going to end well for either of them?
Should he get workers comp? No he wasn’t working legally.
Should we shut down the business and take everything he owns away for his part in breaking the law? Yes. Then maybe the rest of them would see it really doesn’t pay to hire illegal aliens.

And just imagine, if he'd never come here illegally and broken our laws, he would have never had that accident where he sliced his own face open with a chain saw through his own negligence.
