I ask because it seems to me that apprenticeship programs are dissapearing in this country (usa).

Punt. Actually, what generally happens is someone will attempt to re-invent the wheel and spend a lot of money doing so as the company goes down the tubes. Some people just feel that their singular knowledge of how to turn the wheel is equatable to job security.

College and intern programs have pretty well replaced the concept of apprenticeships. They're not always as effective as an apprenticeship because colleges generally lack real-world experience, and intern programs generally don't include a mandate to provide a broad knowledge base, and yet we somehow get along.

All I can say is---I agree. You cannot find anyone willing to hire you, unless you have at least a few years or more experience (even if you have a degree)!
