They are basically the same thing. The main ingredient is cornmeal. They have two differnt names because Polenta is from Europe and grits are from Southern U.S.

Same type of texture, but grits are from the homey of the corn kernels that have been soaked in lye. Polenta is made from cornmeal. They do both come from corn.

Not the same. . . Polenta is made from corn meal. Grits are a corn product, but not the same flavor at all. Although I can see along the line you were thinking, since the texture is the same.

They're both mushes made from corn, but hominy is treated with lye solution to dissolve the outer shell (from horse corn?)
I remember eating corn meal mush with milk and sugar one day and then having it sliced and fried and served with syrup the next day. We never had grits until my sister's high school band went to Florida for a competition and she got the rest of us to try it. Now that I live in MD, I've learned to eat it with butter and pepper instead of milk and sugar.
Grits are white; corn meal is usually yellow.

Grits is different from polenta in that its coarser and usually white in color. Polenta is made from finely sieved masa.

lol...some of these answers are so funny...you have white grits and yellow grits....but polenta is considered Italian grits...they are the same thing!!!!
