depends on the size of the cage, smaller cages, or if the rat only stays in one area you should change every other day. I now have a really big cage for my rat, she poos and pees in one spot, her food is on the other side of the cage and she sleeps on the third story. I clean her cage once a week.

it really depends on the size of the cage. average is once a week. but if you think it needs it more, then you can do it more.
just to let you know. never use cedar as a bedding. the oils in it can make robents sick

You should often change your bedding in a rat's cage at least once a week.
Good luck!

I had my rat in a 20 gallon acquarium decked out six ways to Sunday with hidey holes, boxes, etc. to play in. I'd go in every other day and clean out the corner she pooped/peed in, yes she only did it in one corner, fluffing up the cedar chips and adding fresh. Then, every two weeks, I'd dismantle all and really give it a good cleaning.

i change mine every week but i use fleece bedding. it absorbes the smell and any liquid. if you use newspaper it is best to change it every day. but don't use cedar or pine shavings these are very deadly. and may kill you beloved pet.
