1 Tim 2:11-12
A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent.

Or is this yet another example of god having a bad day?

One of my post doc announced this morning that she got a real job at a good university.

Yea for her!!! Boohoo for me, she’ll be missed. :-(

Maybe that book has become a wee bit outdated.

It's another misinterpretation of the bible. It doesn't mean what many people assumes it means.
I'll explain some about it.
Paul is guiding and instructing Timothy, no one else. (This is what that verse is talking about)
Only Timothy is aware of the correct or actual teachings. The verses shows Timothy as having a son, which would mean he has a wife. Paul is telling Timothy not to let his wife preach, especially because she doesnt' know everything that Timothy is being taught. likewise with other women who learns from Timothy.
The women may be learning some things form Tinothy, but they still don't know everything that Timothy knows. Thus, if they go on their own to preach or teach, then they'll be more likely to, as women are known to do when gossiping, twist things.
Why does it mention women, not men.
If you read all of the bible, it says that no man will believe him. Regardless what he preach. (Which is true about Timothy) If you try and ask Preachers who have graduated from college ministries if they believe the teachings of Timothy, then you'll most likely get the answer, "no".
Preacher/s I've spoke to who has learned the teachings of Timothy tell me they don't believe him what he taught. They say his teachings are scarry.
Since no man believes him, then how about women? Would any of them believe him. That's what Paul is warning Timothy, Paul is telling Timothy he may teach to a woman, but she isn't to preach. She may teach, but not preach. Why not. Like Adam and Eve. The woman was beguiled, not Adam. It is Timothy who knows, not the woman who learns from him. They are more likely to make mistakes, because their knowledge is limited.
Anyway, Paul is telling that to Timothy for a reason. Paul wasn't telling that to any other man. As you know, the false preist have been preaching that it relates to all men. Which is another one of the false teachings.

Paul didn't allow it, probably because back then women had few rights and were not educated. Jesus mentions Priscella and Aquila by name , as being workers in the gospel, and one of them was a woman, so Jesus must not have minded. In a marriage though, a husband is commanded to love his wife like Christ loved the church and be willing to give his life for her. the man was to be the final authority in the marriage . Most men are not tyrants and let the wife jointly help him make decisions, but when there is an impasse, the man has the final authority. The man also has the responsibility, he will be held accountable for the choices.

Most pagan religions pre Christianity had women priestesses and wise woman who were healers, midwifes, etc. When the male dominated christian sect needed to consolidate its power these women were seen as a threat to that power. How could you lead the minds of a people if they were secretly going to some village woman for help or advice, they had to have their congregations solely dependent on them for everything to establish and keep their political and economic power and women had to be shut up. Why is it nobody can understand that the bible was written by man to serve a political and economic purpose? There might be hints of genuine material mixed in but it is not the infallible word of some omnipotent being it is a man made and interpreted tool. Witches weren't burned because they could fly through the air or work "magic" witches were burned because their knowledge was threatening or more commonly to lay possession to their land and property. How is it people can still blindly follow such an obviously flawed book?

Well, first of all she does not have a penis and therefore is not even near an equal to man,
second of all the timothy books have been proven to be forgeries by a man that despised and hated women and christians who still take this books to consideration should read about where these books came from.
And second God nor Jesus ever said that. Why would God place a woman under man, She wouldn't. woman was her Glory of creation. Man has put woman under him because he is afraid of the power of life that she contains.

The man has authority from God. Women are not given the same authority as men, and were created from men.

I hate to break the news to you, but God did not say "I create men and women equal" as many in the western world hold. He did say they were both made in His image, but God flat out told the woman that man would rule over the woman.

Genesis 3:16 16 To the woman He said, "I will greatly multiply Your pain (1)in childbirth, In pain you will (a)bring forth children; Yet your desire will be for your husband, And (b)he will rule over you."

The real problem is men who abuse their authority or don't take up their authority in a relationship.

The Bible doesn't bow to recent western culture, or any culture for that matter. It just states the truth.

In his instruction to Timothy, Paul is speaking with regard to a specific area of disorder and misconduct. His concern is with the unlearned, disruptive women in the congregation, and not godly, gifted women in the pulpit.

As is usually the case, a great many take scripture out of context and cause many to be confused.

Oh, it's not women, it's men.

You see, every man that sees even an inch of female flesh wants to rape her, so the woman must be covered up and hidden from everyone's eyes. Men can't be expected to control themselves.

And if she gets raped, it's her own fault.

At least, that's the answer in Abrahamic mythology, where the only time nonconsenting sex with a woman is a crime is if she's married or you don't pay her father afterwards.

And that's the BIBLE answer, not mine.

You must take into account what was left out when the Bible when it was canonized!

Excerpts from one of several translations of the Gnostic Gospel of Thomas:
"These are the secret sayings which the living Jesus spoke and which Didymos Judas Thomas wrote down.

(1) And he said, "Whoever finds the interpretation of these sayings will not experience death."

(2) Jesus said, "Let him who seeks continue seeking until he finds. When he finds, he will become troubled. When he becomes troubled, he will be astonished, and he will rule over the All."...

(8) And he said, "The man is like a wise fisherman who cast his net into the sea and drew it up from the sea full of small fish. Among them the wise fisherman found a fine large fish. He threw all the small fish back into the sea and chose the large fish without difficulty. Whoever has ears to hear, let him hear."...

(30) Jesus said, "Where there are three gods, they are gods. Where there are two or one, I am with him."...

(48) Jesus said, "If two make peace with each other in this one house, they will say to the mountain, 'Move Away,' and it will move away."...

(114) Simon Peter said to him, "Let Mary leave us, for women are not worthy of life." Jesus said, "I myself shall lead her in order to make her male, so that she too may become a living spirit resembling you males. For every woman who will make herself male will enter the kingdom of heaven."

Sadly, one or two years ago a protestant church decided to ban a woman from teaching Sunday school, citing this very verse. She had taught Sunday school at this church for 20-something years.
