I think Superbeast has got this one about right. Btw have you ever has a good look at fast cook spaghetti? It actually has a hole going through the length of it so it cooks quicker but to me that also means you need more of it to fill you up!

i'm not really sure,,but the old people here swear that sprinkling a little salt after adding the water will make the rice cook faster..i haven't really tried it to see if it's really true..

cook it in a rice cooker or boil it for about 20 mins.

It is usually pre-cooked in some fashion. You will just be finishing the job.

It's par boiled then dried. So basically by adding water you are reconstituting it.

The outer layer is taken off, it also makes it less nutritious.
