My husband promised me he'd take me fishing this year for striped bass. We live on Long Island in New York.

A few months ago he told me the best time for striper fishing is late September, early October. Now that that time has come, NOW the best time is late October, early November.

What I want to know, is where is the best places to go surf fishing on long island and when is the best time.

What should I use?

Striped bass are unpredictable. So far, this year, it looks like a late October striper bite from the surf. This spring, and so far this fall, have been soooo sloowwwww. It's bound to pick up. Right now, however, nothing. Best beaches - Jones Beach Field 6 or West End 2. Robert Moses Field 2, 3 or 5. Long Beach, Pacific, Roosevelt, or New York. Best bait clams. If, however, you also want to catch bluefish, then bunker.

I don't know the best places on Long Island (I fish on the south coast of Rhode Island), but Striper fishing is heating up now. I've caught the most and biggest Stripers from the 3rd week in September all the way to Thanksgiving. This season has been a bit strange because of the weather. Usually thier are more fish around now, but the seas are pretty calm and thier is a ton of bait in the water. A good storm will churn up the water and make the fish more likely to go on a feeding frenzy.

I'm from Glen Cove, and I say that you can't go wrong at the Morgan Beach jedi right about now. The Snapper Derby is long gone and there is a bite in the air, but the blues and stripers are out there in full force.

Listen to Mac about this subject. He's the "mac" when talking about Northern, East- Coast, fishing.
