It is recurrent, happening about 3-4 times a week, usually at night. What could this mean? This has been persistnet for about six weeks. Should I consult my doctor or just dismiss it?

The pains are short but shapr, (about 10 seconds but occuring intermittentlly until I take something to releive them. but sharp, to the point where I have to stop whatever I am doing.)

you definitely need to be examined. I recommend you see a chiropractor who can help stop these types of problems. They are spinal experts and it sounds like this problem is coming from the neck area. I've enclosed to link were you can find a qualified chiropractor in your area.

Go to the doctor. It may turn out to be nothing but you'll be told that by a professional and you'll stop worrying.
