That's a really hard question to answer, just because each different person will develop their own way of motivating themselves and thinking positive.

Personally, I use treats and rewards as motivation. I also commonly look at how well I've done something or how well I'm doing in it to motivate me to keep going on it. I've also used music to help motivate me and keep me thinking positively.
I had a job where I was selling door to door and getting a LOT of rejection, and those are what helped me get through each day without letting the bad stuff get to me as much. That being said, I also had already developed a "thick skin" earlier in life (when I was picked on a lot), so I didn't pay attention as much to negative things.

I also know of people that have used certain statements to help push themselves or think positively. That never worked for me, but everyone has to figure out what works best for them.

What helps for most people that I've noticed especially for depression is to evaluate the feelings, verbally name them, and then try to remember the good things that are happening. A lot of people that haven't done this before get a lot of help from a counselor... a person who will listen and help you to evaluate your feelings.
