If we were seriously at war with China, I doubt we would start with an invasion. I would think that we would have to start with a complete bombardment of the Chinese infrastructure with Tomahawks, Smartbombs, etc. before we could even think about sending in ground troops.

The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (CJCS) is responsible for organizing, training and equiping our forces. He does NOT plan the strategy of invading other countries. That is for the Combatant Comander to do. (the combatant comander is the regional general responsible for all military operations in their area of the globe).
The main problem is numbers. China's Infantry alone is more than twice as large as our entire military combined. HOWEVER, they lack the technology or the air power that we have... and that's a force multiplier in the extreme.
As to facing down China, my strategy would be this:
1) stage in Taiwan to tick em off
2) land 100K troops on the eastern coast as bait
3) Bomb anything that comes within a 100 mile radius of your "bait" troops as they move along the coast destroying ports
4) Sequester India to invade in a ground assault... That'll help even the numbers, and China doesn't have the infrastructure on their western side to respond as effectively.
5) destroy every port on their eastern coast and then leave their shores. The ensuing economic crisis caused by destroying their entire shipping industry would be enough damage.

I agree that it would not happen ever, but for hypothetical talking, I would start with a massive air campaign to bomb China's military bases and other types of resources. I'm talking about a long long long time of bombing. Then I would have any other allies with us cut off any routes to other countries in case they try to invade thier next door countries to use thier resources while we start a ground campaign. I don't think that I would start the invasion with air troops right off the bat. Maybe I would use them to assist in taking over several key places and ports so that we can get our armor on the ground. Then I would just push inward towards suburban areas and surround the larger cities. Then take over the larger cities. All the while having the planes still attacking from the air and artillery to soften up future operations.

"Overwhelming force" will not be achievable when taking on a military that is as huge as China's.
If we're talking using only conventional weapons, then i'd actually say that an attack on China couldn't possibly succeed. The numbers would be heavily stacked against the attacker, too much so to overcome.

Can't happen to many Chinese soldiers as mentioned before. The best option would be salvos by the entire Trident fleet. Catch'em with their pants down so to speak. However, that would create nuclear winter and destroy the earth also.

If you were the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs and expressed this outloud you would find yourself without a job and likely in a hospital under "observation."

China is doing nothing to America so I'd advise you to keep away. The worldwould turn against America ifit were to start trash with China.
Fighting China wouldn't be like bullying some weak-assed middle eastern country. China would kick the living crap out of America.
Keep your military at home where it belongs.
