I am filling out an employment application for a company from which I had received a job offer. One of the questions they ask me is to explain any gaps in my employment history. I have had one (for 7 month) 2 years ago, for very personal and tragic reasons, major life changing experiences, and relocation. How do I state it in the application, without having to recap everything that had happened to me?

Appreciate your help!

I would give a very general answer like to take care of some now resolved family issues. The employer doesn't care what your past issues are just if they will effect you job in the future. For only 7 months and you moved I might just put the move and job search as the reason not mentioning anything else.

Up to you...tell all or just be vague. You could say you were working for yourself at the time...or you were involved in dealing with family affairs...or you could just leave it blank and if asked about it just tell them you had the opportunity to take some time off due to successes from previous jobs and so you took it.

Careful what you say here - even though they're offering you a job, it doesn't mean you have to give them your life history - especially things of a personal nature...that said, if their questioning gets too personal and pointed in the interview process, you can always let them know you'd rather not talk about it further as the subject is too personal and that you'd prefer to move on to a more appropriate line of questioning regarding what you can bring to the company as an employee.

I would strongly recommend that you do not lie about anything. Here's why....you will have to remember the lie and add to it over time. Eventually it will become a huge out of control thing that you will not be able to remember how it got started. Just tell the truth.....it will set you free. You can't say the right thing to the wrong person or the wrong thing to the right person so let the universe do what it does.

GOOD LUCK

During this unemployment gap did you do any volunteer work?? You might try putting down that you took time off to volunteer your time in some different fields of work you were interested in. To try to expand your horizons before you decided on what career path you wished to re-enter. You could state that you were financially able to take this drastic step, but felt that you needed time to explore what your career options were. Now that you were steadfast in your career choice, you are ready to make the commitment and dedication to this company to become a valued asset.

Personal Sabbatical. I've done the same thing. My gaps were in between jobs and I did some traveling...
I just put down Personal Sabbatical and if they asked about it, I would tell them that I just took time off from career and had some good times, or the like. Actually, it makes you more marketable if you work it right.

You can always give a watered down version of the truth. For example my friend took a lot of time off work due to his mother being sick and caring for her. He just told the employer he was caring for her.
I have another friend who almost had a nervous breakdown due to her divorce, she told them she took time off to spend with her kids.
Sorry I don't have a better answer. Good Luck!
