Most electricians are required to have a City license. One sure way to tell an unlicensed one is if they start talking about "saving" you money by not getting permits to do the work. They should be licensed, bonded and insured to protect you and your property while working in your home. From experience, checking with the BBB is almost useless.

You do need to get ahold of your State electrical dept. You also want someone who is at leat journeyman level, appretice is okay (depending on how long they've been an apprentice). The State Elec. dept can tell you if a company or person is legit and licensed. After that, i would contact your BBB to make sure that they are fair and have no or little complaints about them or their work. Don't be afraid to ask for refernces. Calling a past "job" of theirs could give you insight if they are good, clean, and don't screw around.
GOOD LUCK!

It does not matter what the certificate looks like, To verify the validity of the certificate I would call the licensing board for electricians and contractors in your area. You might even check with the Better Business Bureau. You will need the certificate number, name and address of the contractor. Also ask for references and call them
