First off, we don't just randomly shoot civilians, even when they enter restricted areas. Now, of course, if you assault the guards, enter too far into the wrong area, or ignore guards trying to stop you and try to continue deeper into restricted areas, you might get shot.
As to getting on Area 51, don't bother. There's not that much going on there anymore. At the same time, the infrastructure for intrusion detection is still top notch, so you'll most likely be apprehended within 10 minutes.
Tresspassing on a military installation is a federal offense. That being said, if you go into area 51 you could also be tried for sedition, espionage, and/or treason. A treason charge would strip you of your status as a citizen and allow the other charges to be made against you in a military court where term limits don't apply... in other words, you could go to jail for life depending on where you went and what you did.

NO - they are not going to kill you. Chances are you wouldn't get close enough to the site for them to use that kind of force.
As mentioned below, the area is high security, even if it has been downgraded. With the sensors, cameras and other security measures, you wouldn't make it very far before they stopped you.
------------------
Well, good luck in sneaking up on that area. They have a motion detection system throughout the area. Not only that but they do have a pretty good security team that is continually watching the area.
They won't shoot you since they will have the upper hand. They deal with people all the time trying to sneak into the area.
Your best bet is to find a local in the areas to take you on a tour. There are supposed area that you can see the base from a hilltop that is a few miles away so bring your binoculars.
Why don't you just GOOGLE Earth and see it that way?

You can go up to the perimeter. It is clearly marked with easy to understand signs if you read and understand English. Too big for a fence. However, it is several miles from the perimeter to any type of structure across some pretty rough barren terrain. If you trespass, and they catch you, you will be arrested, charged, and can go to Federal Prison. The area is patrolled and monitored with seismic devices. Depending on what is happening, they may have unmanned or manned aircraft and guards "in the bush" to watch for intruders. To sneak onto the property would be very stupid.

Area 51's security has been downgraded. A person can now approach the area and see the perimeter fence. Any closer than that, and you are risking too much. I have heard that much of the activity that was being protected at Area 51 has been moved to a different location.

Great idea. And, for $99.99, I will send you my Super Duper Raygun Protection Kit that is guaranteed to deflect raygun firing from the known Area 51 aliens. As an added bonus for an additional $49.99, I will send you my Sneaky Bob Cloaking Device that you, your dad and brother can put on to prevent the guards from seeing you and placing many large round holes throughout your body.
As a special bonus, without cost, I'll send you a copy of my two best selling books, "How To Handcuff 14-Legged Aliens" and "Redneck Infiltration Methods and How To Cook a Possum".
Oh, and don't forget to duck.

Trespassing on government property is a federal offense. The MAXIMUM is 20 years prison with a $250,000 fine.
You're not the sharpest tool in the shed, are you.

This is a very bad idea and could cost you your life, you definitely will have a very bad experience trespassing on restricted Government property. Use a satellite map service instead.

you arent just going to get shot, you will get wiped from existance of this world, if you try and hike up there, there are guards in the woods, with about 30000 cameras, and motion sencers, and what not. so yeah if they see you, you are most likely to die, because they are to think you are an intruder and im sure as hell dont think that they are going to stop and think about a kid and his brothers. if you are going to do it do it with life insurance and drunk, and id wear a bullet proof vest, also since it doesnt exist, you are most likely to be under a contract to keep your mouth shut, or have your memory erased. or enteragated, to tell the truth about who you are, but they arent really going to believe some kid and his brothers, that they're just hiking up there.
i say do it, the least they can do is federal prison for 20 years, so its not as bad as death.

They might shoot you. Since the place officially doesn't exist, they could just dispose of your body and no one would be the wiser. It's easier to hike up the nearby mountains and use a telescope to see inside.

After you are captured, you'll be transported to the Mother ship and have unspeakable procedures done to your shriveled, naked body. After you are returned, conveniently with no memory of the outrages done to you, you will begin a life long obsession with hamsters.
