The tattoo artist will put some sort of cover on it after he/she is done tattooing. You should leave that on for 4-5 hours, then wash your tattoo with mild soap and water and let it air dry. After that, you shouldn't cover up your tattoo. Any wound needs to breathe in order to help it heal. After washing your tattoo, leave it alone over night. Then, starting the next morning, you should start putting unscented lotion on it, such as Lubriderm, or a tattoo cream like H2Ocean. Only put it on 3 times a day, and only put a thin layer on.
Don't use any types of ointments or Vaseline-like product as these products don't allow your tattoo to breathe. Also, stay away from products like Polysporin/Neosporin as these products are designed to pull foreign cells from your body, such as tattoo ink.
Don't worry about your tattoo rubbing on the back of your calf. You'll be fine with that spot.
Best of luck!! Enjoy your tattoo! =)

I have Phil Ochs tattooed on my arm (folk singer) I also have "Never Die" and a rose tattooed across my toes, with a tigerbat above the toes on my left foot for Tiger Army. I see me getting a couple more musician tattoos. I have an Ochs lyric tattoed across the back of my neck (Sacred are the scars) and an Op Ivy lyric across the insides of both arms (It's beautiful I would say... I wouldn't have it any other way.) I'm thinking about a hot-rod culture tat, skulls and roses and a banner, gotta pick the lyric to go in the banner though. As it stands today, I'd probably choose "In death as in life, I will arise" or "My conscience carries the weight of blood."

One of my artists put a gauze bandage, the other used saran wrap. Both of them told me to wait 2-3 hours before removing it. I washed with warm water and anti-bacterial soap, let it air dry, and applied a fragrance free lotion (I used Jergend once, and Curel another). Both of my pieces healed great and still look great. I guess it just depends on who's doing your work.
Your artist will instruct you on how to care for you tattoo before you leave.

you shouldn't use a bandage or saran wrap at all. you should let it be just as it is. wear clothes that will not rub it excessively.

you will definitly get a bandage from the tat artist, after you remove the bandage you should use some A+D ointment for 48 hours and then get some CUREL (only curel) and use it for 2 weeks this helps it maintain its color ..trust me this works I have 3 tats and my friend who gave me this advise had 19 and they all looked as if he had just gotten them! congrats on the Tat!

I always like to use gauze. It protects the tattoo from rubbing, but it also lets it breathe...you can get it at any drugstore in your town and typically comes with tape special for sticking to skin.

You will get (hopefully) a bandage from the tattoo artist and after care directions. NO saran wrap, please!
