A far better option to XP would be Ubuntu, which is open source and free.
It is perfect for giving older PC's a new lease of life, it takes a little getting used to, but with a little perseverance you will forget all about XP.

Burn the ISO file disc, to make a bootable image, using MagicISO, a free trial is available for download. Link is :

Windows XP and almost all other software is a licensed product sold for a single machine use.
If one version of XP is loaded onto a pc it cannot legally be used on any other pc. Were one to do this, he / she would be violating the license agreement and violating Intellectual Property laws. It makes absolutely NO difference whether you are loading it on a brand new or an old pc.
However, if a single version of XP were loaded onto a pc and later this pc were retired and no longer in use (e.g. if the pc were destroyed in a fire), the XP version could legally be loaded onto one and only one other pc.
Purchase of someone's used XP disc is NOT an assurance that the orignal is no longer in use. If you are caught with it, you are subject to legal liabilities which will cost you far more just for your defense than the cost of purchase of a clean, unused copy from a legal purchase source. I recommend you follow the legal path and purchase it legally.

That really depends if you want to do it honestly or not so honestly. If you want to do it honestly, you can buy one are places like best buy or Fry's. You can also look at eBay and purchase one there. If you willing to go on the other side of the tracks, ask your friends if they have a windows XP disk and load it. When it attempts to register it with MS, answer that you want to do it over the phone. Call that number and when they ask how many machines you are using it on...tell them just this one and you had to replace the hard drive so you are having to reinstall. They will give you a huge number you put in and you are golden.
If you decide to go the borrow a XP disk from a friend, you will be fine. Microsoft doesn't worry about individual users but will go after companies who use a single copy for everyone.
Good luck,
Z

There is no such thing as a "used" Windows XP disc unfortunately..
Each Windows operating system disc comes with a serial number that is needed for product activation. So once the cd is used, it cant be used again if it is activated.
I would however suggest pcclub.com, you can find Windows XP on there for $100 out the door.. cheapest price yet.

Not likely. No such thing. Gates has made it so that there is a license between 1 computer and 1 xp program. Microsoft can swoop into your sons computer like a virus and shut it down if it sees that he has not bought a legitimate version of the program.
I know that from getting a burnt copy. I have XP but only to ServicePack1. Service pack2 comes from microsoft and that is where you are hooped. So basically I have a glorified Win98.

You should try eBay. They're pretty good for picking up cheap copies of XP. If its below, like, $20 its probably pirated though. So be careful.
