"Stevia" is what I use a lot of. It is slightly more expensive than stuff like Splenda, Equal, etc.
See www.stevia.com for more information. The articles will tell you how to grow your own stevia, if you want.
I usually buy mine at www.shopping.com and purchase whatever company has the best price. I always buy the big boxes to save money.

Hint: Do not buy the liquid, it makes food taste funny. I ALWAYS buy the small, individual packets. Also I use unfiltered honey to sweeten some foods.

You can find a substance called stevia...naturally occurring, made from the herb. Also, xylitol...made from birch trees and has an incredible effect on killing germs that cause tooth decay and gum disease, lowering the glycemic level, as well as helping young children avoid the chronic ear infections (a substance that the ADA and AMA don't want you to know about. Stevia can be cooked without losing its sweetness, and has very little after taste. Xylitol pours like Splenda, but doesn't do so well in the baking department. Side effects? None that are harmful -- the same can't be said about the rest, save honey. Where can you find Xylitol or stevia? At any health food store. Good luck, and bon apetit!

STEVIA - 100% natural, Stevia is a new type sweetener extracted from the Stevia Leaves (Herbaceous herb of the Compositae family). It features high sweetness and low calories. It is natural - not artificial (it wont cause cancer). Many medicinal experiments shows that this kind of sugar has no side effect, innocuity, no carcinogenesis, it can prevent people from hypertension, diabetes, adiposity, tooth decay and so on. The stevia sugar has been extensively used in food, drinks, medicine, daily-use chemical industry, wine brewery, cosmetics, etc. Especially it can save 70% of cost. It looks white, and tastes nice, without odour, and is a sugar source with bright future.

Reach out to your local health food store.

Splenda does not contain Aspartame, which is what gets the horror stories.

You may want to consider trying Honey as already mentioned. I made a No Bake Cheese pie/cake and substituted about ¼ cup honey for the sugar (I say add for taste, some may want a ½ cup honey). Honey may have some health benefits too.

All artificial sweetners have the same problems/side effects, etc., From what I have heard Spenda is actually less harmful in studies than things like Nutrasweet. I have recently heard good things about Xylitol. You could look into that and weight the pros and cons.
