Please, no flaming answers here...this is a legitimate question to Christians that popped in my head while reading answers to another question.
Why do so many Christians answer a question with scripture from the bible?
I personally don't mind when Christians speak of their beliefs. However, most of these answers I read remind me of waaaayy back in high school when I could look at a math or geometry problem and give the answer. I could give the answer...but not show my work. As the teacher said, if I couldn't show HOW I got the answer, it's not right.
I had one friend actually tell me that any good virtue such as love, understanding, committment, and so on were Christian concepts. He witnessed to a man one night and the man stopped him. The man responded "I don't care what bible verse you use or what Jesus said, what do you think?" My friend was stuck. Without speaking scripture, he himself couldn't answer. So why not answer with what YOU think without scripture?

Thanks for the quick answers since this one is weighing heavy on my mind. But let me add a little to what I told my friend that night (it's a little strange but hope you can follow). He didn't get it...but maybe some of you will.
If I've never eaten a Big Mac...do you think you could get me to eat one just by telling me the ingredients? Or would you have a better chance of telling me how it tasted? It's a strange analogy...but that's how my mind rolls (LOL).

Since the bible is the Christians main source for everything, you can expect them to quote it profusely.
Even I a non-Christian use my own knowledge of scripture to answer questions.
But you also need to provide an explanation, exegesis and context. I try to do this (unless the scripture is self-explanatory)
However some do not, they just list a whole bunch of scriptures and since most do not approach them with the same religious foundation and coded language and meanings Christians have for certain things, it can be very confusing for someone who is not familiar with the doctrine.
My advice to Christians would be to explain things more simply for those who are not "in the know" about your interpretation of scripture. Do not assume they automatically know what you are getting at. A lot of people do not. It just looks like gibbersh to them.

One reason is Gods word contains authority. How ever you are right, each person should be able to answer why or why not they believe what they believe on their own merits. But now don't get all up in the air about this, this problem is not just inherent to Christians, look at most atheist, where as a Christian may say, the "bible says" an atheist will answer "science says" but in both cases critical thinking has been replaced with what someone else has wrote or said.
One thing that really gets me, is if a Christian say the "bible says" it is instantly disqualified by non-believers as they say it was wrote by men.
at the same time they will claim, "science says" because they read it in a book that was wrote by who? men? women? what? get my point?

Excellent question! Too often it seems like people use the Bible as a crutch, as an encyclopedia of "how do I be an apologist for God and religion", rather than thinking for themselves.
Maybe they think that to even think of sinful acts is a sin in itself, for example thinking of a luscious, sweet Krispy Kreme(tm) donut going down their gullet as gluttony in the extreme, when in fact it's a simple treat.
It's a pity that some choose to live their lives with their nose in the Book, rather than breathing in the sweet air of life.

Non-flaming response :) -
It's called going to the source.
(2) You ask a Christian a reason for their position on a certain thing.
(2) A Christian's reason for their position would be the Bible
therefore
2 + 2 =
(4) A Christian will cite the source of his or her reasoning.

Because we believe that what the Bible says is true. We live according to the Word of God. The Bible is what we believe. Not everyone can re-phrase the verse, or explain the meaning of a verse, so it is quoted instead.
Speaking for myself, the Bible is my final authority.

Humans should indeed be taught how to think, not what to think!
A closed mind is such a waste.
A closed mind causes a person to become "Stiff-necked".
When a person dies and stands before "Judgment", earthly books will not be allowed to be used in ones defense. The recording angels will see to that!

I don't. I usually give my input. Then if a scripture can back up my opinion, I include it. Unless it's a troll posting an insulting question. Then he/she just gets a Bible quote in response.

there are lots of methods to invite a query you need to ask it in some way that doesn't mock others demean others ..however I am afraid the best way wherein Mr Odampully asks questions harm many humans's religion ..its just like the enthusiast religionists who say mine is the one proper factor and all people else is a idiot ..I dont take him that severely however Iam definite that a few are in opposition to the best way wherein he asks his questions ... in line with me I can by no means keep in mind Odampully same to sanathan dharm or Sri Vidyarajagopalan or Prr Krishna Sir thats due to the fact they by no means ask or reply in some way that might harm the ideals of an extra individual

God says it best. If a Christian answers without scripture he is accused of speaking for God. If he answers with the word of God he is accused of not thinking for himself. Most Christians back up their answers with the word of God should you be interested in what God has to say.
