It is against scripture. Why would you KNOWINGLY sin and condemn yourself?Or is the Bible wrong?Or maybe you haven't read it?
James 5:12
Above all, my brothers, do not swear—not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. Let your "Yes" be yes, and your "No," no, or you will be condemned

Father K,as usual, you bring nothing of substance. Not surprising. There had just been a question where certain christians defended swearing on the bible, and condemned atheists for not doing so.When is the last time you thought before you spoke?I know you don't have to swear on it Jr.I'm not ignorant like those you spill your nonsense to

James 5:12 echoes Matthew 5:34 ' ... but I say to you, make no oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God...' These statements from Matthew are called hyperbole - speaking 'over the top'. They are not meant to be taken literally but to emphasise a serious point. For instance no-one goes around missing a right hand or eye (Matt.5:29, 30: '... If your right eye makes you stumble, tear it out and throw it from you ... if your right hand makes you stumble, cut it off and throw it from you.')
And don't forget the oaths sworn by Paul and God (Romans 1:9;2 Cor.1:23; Hebrews 6:13,14,16,17; 7:20-22;). Also Christ accepts an oath sworn in his presence (Matthew 26:63). There is no question of condemning the use of the oath, only its misuse.

Well, the Bible also says that we are to "Obey the ORDINANCES of the land for the Lord's sake." Besides, some levels of government allow one to "affirm" rather than "swear" which is essentially the same thing. The act of swearing on the Bible is man-made for the sake of law; it has no religious connotations other than to remind the person under oath that man is fallible, but GOD is infallible!

enable's seem on the genuine meanings of those words to work out why God does not like them: Curse- a solemn oath or epithet of malicious motive, directed at self or yet another, proclaiming some undesirable consequence will ensue sooner or later Swear- to solemnly promise to do some thing, to make an oath obliging your self to accomplish some job, generally calling upon God to be your witness Profane-common, worldly, secular, not holy generally this sort of language human beings call cursing/swearing at present isn't basically like this sort of language got here across offensive in the Bible. we tend to apply diverse meaningless expletives, with sexual or scatological overtones. they won't be clever or powerful, however the genuine possibility of cursing or swearing is that "dying and existence is in the capacity of the tongue." (Proverbs 18:21) asserting some thing like "you will in no way quantity to something." "you're valueless basically like your father." "pass to hell." those issues are very evil and offensive to God. Yours in Christ, Nick

Many Confessional Lutherans will NOT swear on the Bible. Here in Canada we are allowed to Affirm. I know a Police officer who has been on the stand many times. His affirmation has always been good enough.

Since this is not a requirement in any of the 50 US states ("swearing on the bible") - I have no idea why you are bringing it up.
At any time a Christian my "affirm" that he/she will tell the truth. As a matter of fact - bailiffs say "do you swear of affirm?"
When was the last time you did jury duty? In the Stone Age?

When I went to court I told them that I couldn't swear on the Bible because it was against my belief so they had me raise my left hand and "Promise to tell the truth to the best of my ability" NO BIBLE involved!

Many christians do not do this, you need to repent of this allegation and prejudice.
When I went in the military they allowed me to change the oath so I didn't have to swear.
