What is the best way/cheapest way to travel from place to place in the city? The taxi or the metro (I think that's what it is called).

The best way to get around Manhattan is to walk if it's less than a mile - I use buses most of the time and only use the subway if the weather's too bad to wait outside for the bus or I'm going a long distance (the subway's faster than the bus, but the time difference isn't that much for a short distance). The bus ride is more pleasant, it's outside so you can see something other than a dirty tunnel wall, you don't have to climb up and down the subway stairs and don't have to wait on a swealtering platform in the summer or be boxed in on a crowded platform. Both the subways and buses run all night long every day. Except for delays or very, very late at night, you rarely have to wait more than ten minutes for either one.

I never take taxis - they are expensive, get stuck in traffic and many of the drivers are reckless. I will telephone a car service when necessary - I use one where I know most of the drivers drive safely.

The subways and buses are safe and they are easy to navigate. If you have a problem, you can call the MTA at (718) 330-1234 - that number is manned by live personnel from about 6am to 10:30 pm and they will answer all your questions and give you detailed directions. Buy a MetroCard.

Have a great time.

Well there 5 borough but im assuming your a tourist so that mean your first stop would be manhattan or " the city"

To get around in " the city" , it is best for you to just take the subway and walk..no need for buses or taxi because traffic is on the street 24 hrs 7 days a week in the city..

In some cities, they call it the metro. In New York, we call it the "Subway." That, along with the buses, make up one of the best mass-transit systems in the world. They take you just about anywhere in the city, especially in Manhattan. It's also inexpensive, at just $2 a ride. Furthermore, it's fast and it's clean.

In my whole life living in New York, I've never found any need to take a taxi. They're expensive and they get stuck in traffic.

I spent a weekend in NYC about 2 weeks ago. It was my first time there and I was on a super tight budget. I used the Subway to get around...it's $7 for a "fun pass" you can use all day with free transfers on the bus. Otherwise, it's $2 a pop on the subway.

I was VERY surprised by the fact that you can walk to get mostly anywhere in Manhattan. I stayed at the Warwick hotel on W. 56th (I THINK), and didn't realize EVERYTHING was so closeby. I walked to Times Square, Central Park, 5th Ave. etc. The only time I used the subway was to get to Chinatown and to see the Statue of Liberty.

Here's a link to get directions for the Subway: http://www.hopstop.com/ it's much easier than reading a map. And you won't stick out like a "tourist" either. lol

Enjoy...I am saving up to go back! I LOVE NY!

I just went to NYC at the end of march. I would say a must see would be where the twin towers went down and Battery Park, which is where you get on the boat to see the Statue of Liberty. Chinatown isn't all that kinda dirty but the stuff you can get is neat. I would also go down Broadway, which is right near where the towers came down. Central Park is beautiful and a must see as well as Times Square. We spent a lot of time at times square. I would also suggest the subway but I would make sure that you ask someone where to get on and off and get a map for your destinations. I would also take a cab but make sure that you tell them u are in a hurry b/c if they know your don't know where you are going they will purposely give you the longest route so they can make the most money. I would also make sure to take a decent amount of money because you will need it trust me. Have fun its a really cool experience.

The subway is the fastest and cheapest way to move around better. It costs only $2 a ride to get to anywhere + if you want to get off at a certain stop and ride a bus sightseeing, it's free!

The subway is cheapest. Get a map and check it out before you go. Or, walk...lots of New Yorkers do that every day. Have a great trip.
