Yes, they are destructive. No, they shouldn't be banned.

The best way to counter religion is through education. It is superstitious belief, and you can't really ban someone from believing something, no matter how silly or harmful. The best you can do is get them to change their belief through reason, logic, and evidence.

Religion thrives through emotional manipulation. It uses pity for martyrs, guilt for not living up to impossible rules, and group bonding to get and keep converts. Religion makes grand promises and threats to coerce people into not daring to oppose it. It lives in the gaps of our knowledge and plays on human insecurity.

I think there is a huge difference between religion and faith, and it is a great shame that those who would commit atrocities hide behind their religion, twisting its meaning and ideals to suit their own agenda. In the hands of the wrong people, religion is the equivalent of a ten yr old that has decided to play with its fathers gun! Having said that, a healthy faith in whatever universal power (whichever God or Gods make most sense to the individual) can help people to bring people together, build communities, find purpose, comfort, guidance and a way of life that brings them happiness, and no one can argue with that - whatever their religion may be. If you are a fairly normal person that does not have mental health issues or a pathalogical need to exterminate your fellow humans, the very fact that you believe in something that is greater and wiser than yourself, means that you are more respectful of life and often other people, and that you understand the world does not begin and end with your own existence. This will not apply to everyone of course, but I hope that makes a little sense anyway :-)

They get HOPE. I do not know about religion but I do know of Jesus Christ. Go and read the Bible even if you take it as fairy tales and you can find nothing to condemn Him. It gives promise, hope and salvation. It talk about the world problem and how to detach from it. It is of power, honour and glory. It is about being at peace with God and being reconcile, not by our own but by His never ending Love.

Even the other Faith have good things written of Him, only short of calling Him the Saviour. Now will you still take it as Fairy Tale ?

It gives you Fear of God, which is the begining of knowledge. That is why the knowledge of this world could not reason. It is not logical and contradict the knowledge of this world. Until you tested it, you will find it imposible to understand the wisdom of God, or accept there is God.

It gives you boldness in spreading the Good News knowing you are separated.

Religion is not destrutive but the people that is running the institution can be. Wolf in sheep clothing are now in many Churches and they are powerful. Go against them and you find yourself as an outcaste, like yours truly. They have evil motives and put heavy burdens to their follower using the good name of God. They play on emotion, man weakest moment, and Fear of the unknown. Money and Power is their main concern and not their souls.

If God do not banned them from running His Churches, do you think you should. Look carefully the words of God, this thing should happen and have happen long long time ago . Is God blind or is He powerless to do anything ? I leave you this question to answer honestly to yourself and you shall indeed see God's wisdom.

People do fight over religion. But they also fight over nationality, race, region, soccer teams etc etc etc. If we are going to ban religion we might as well ban everything.

There will always be religious extremists as there are always going to be extremely stupid people. And the people who blindly follow them have to be even more stupid.

Not all religiousness is negative. Religion provides many positive social values, a certain amount of education and encourages literacy.
Many religious people are very fine folk. Religion works well in some and not so well in others.
Religion WAS banned in large parts of the communist world, and the effect of that was to reduce the amount of colour and joy in people's lives.

We do not have a right to take religion from others unless we have something better to replace it with. For some of us science is a fine replacement. But it isn't everyody's cup of tea.

Most find solace and peace in having faith that there is something better than this place. They to feel a sense that life is meant for some reason , and they themselves have a purpose, and look to religion to find what that purpose is. Nothing that makes people feel good and worthwhile should be banned. I'm am not a religious person by any means, personally it gives me a headache, but everyone is entitled to their own beliefs and if it makes you feel great in having whatever faith you have, then more power to you.

Very soon, religion WILL be banned. By governments. Then the governments will be able to claim ' peace and security'. When that happens, God will step in and destroy them.
(Revelation 16:14) They are, in fact, expressions inspired by demons and perform signs, and they go forth to the kings of the entire inhabited earth, to gather them together to the war of the great day of God the Almighty.

(Revelation 16:16) And they gathered them together to the place that is called in Hebrew Har–Ma·ged′on.

When all these governments have banned all the religious groups, there will still be one existing. the TRUE religion.
And when they, the governments, try and eliminate THIS group, this is what will happen.
(Zechariah 2:8) For this is what Jehovah of armies has said, ‘Following after [the] glory he has sent me to the nations that were despoiling YOU people; for he that is touching YOU is touching my eyeball.

This group has been banned before in different places and at different times, and God has NOT acted, so this implies a worldwide ban. And the worldwide ban can only happen if a worldwide government is in power...This has to be future.

"--my question is- what do people get from religion?"

You could have stated that FIRST instead of venting Your opinion. We are at the mercy (under the tyranny) of many things in this life, starting with parents and then school, the weather, bad habits, the Law, poverty, collapsing bridges, destructive fires, poisoned food in the stores, death-trap toys for our children, to name ONLY A FEW. All these things are beyond our control, some just plain out of control, and many of them are nothing new to mankind.

So figure it out for Yourself why Believers are so stubborn about trusting in G-d. And G-d bless You.

They are bet hedgers and they are so brainwashed about their religion being the basis for morality that they wouldn't know how to live without it.
Its similar to convincing someone over the years of their life that their right leg doesn't work, that they must use a crutch - they become dependant on the crutch and they don't develop the muscle in their leg. Christians have a retarded development in their reasoning and if you take it away they cease to function properly.
Hopefully the guy with crutch will realised that what he has been told makes no sense - so he starts the recovery process but you can't kick it away from under him.

These are cults, not the same thing as religion. Budhism isn't a religion either, there is no God involved.
Jesus was against religion by the way, which is a man made concept.

I am a Christian and maintain that I have faith in a real person, Jesus. I object to being called stupid for this! I only became a Christian after I met Jesus,. read about Saul on the road to Damascus in the book of Acts and that's the kind of thing that happened to me.
As for what I get out of it, well I have the assurance that God is with me always, is on my side even through tough times. He will accept me into his kingdom so I will experience eternal fellowship with him. It's good to know that this isn't all there is.
When I talk to God, he talks back. At the toughest time of my life, which was last year, God told me to hang on because things would get better, which they did, and they didn't look like it at the time. He never lets me down.
Obedience to God is a pleasure. I obey out of love, not because of rules or being told to. I never knew of sin or fear of death, nobody preached at me, I just met Him.

It's not the religion, it's what individuals do with it. When you watch the news or read the newspaper all you see is the wrong that's done. You're never going to see the good, that's just not entertaining news. You can find the good, you just need to do some reading and find out what each religion is all about. There's always good there, otherwise no one would stay.

Don't think it should be banned, but people should not get so carried away they kill in the name of religion. It brings peace of mind to lots of people and has put meaning in their life. It is the root cause of wars. It is a big profitable business and should be taxed as such.
