I've been asked to produce a caption for picture and I need to know whether to put 'half' or '1/2' in the score. The actual score was 8 1/2 - 9 1/2.

If you are writing the score after the end of the match (as opposed to talking about the halving of a single hole) then 8 1/2 - 9 1/2 would be correct. You don't write "and a half". Increasingly, the decimal form (8.5-9.5) is also used.

The hole is halved and the score remains the same. Imagine you have two players A is 2up after ten holes. Both score a par at the eleventh - the hole is halved and and player A is still 2up.
In the Ryder Cup and other team games 1/2 a point is given to a match tied at the end of 18 holes.

you put it like you have it if it is at the end of the 18th hole and the match is all square (tied) then each team gets a 1/2. However, if they are still playing and say they both get a birdie then the hole is halved.
If say Justin Rose got a birdie, and Tiger Woods got par then Justin would be 1 up and so on and so forth.....
