Is there any way to trace a soldier who may well still be in prison? I am unsure, as a civilian, how the process works. I know he was imprisoned in a military prison in the early 1970s for stabbing his CO to death. Would he stay there for the whole sentence or be moved to a civilian prison- is there any way I might be able to find him?

I only ask as my father is not too healthy any more and this old soldier (who would now be in his early 60s I think) was a childhood friend, and he'd like to see, or hear from him, once more.

Please do not judge him on his actions as I really want to find out if I can get hold of him- thanks.

Under the privacy act, it's almost impossible for civillains to look these things up. But the intentions you had where good. You'd need to go to the military prison where he was at to find out.

a very simple question to answer and i judge no man on his actions lest i too be judged(matthew 7.1) in short, having been convicted of a capital offence your fathers friend would, after being sentenced, been discharged from HM service and transferred to a civilian prison to carry out the sentence imposed, given that this offence was in the 70s then this person would have been released by now so you should in the first instance begin your enquiry with the home office but do not expect too much help from that office, there is also the ex-prisoners association who may be able to help, forces reunited on the web is another avenue to explore, members of the unit he was in are a good source of infomation,as a last resort you could use a tracing agency, remember that the more info you have, the more you get back, good luck

You posted this question before.

And I told you there are no Military Prisons for people in the military who commit MURDER they are sentenced to a Civil Prison to serve there sentence,

Or to a Mental Institution depending on the circumstances of the alleged crime.

So address the question to the HOME OFFICE, you will get their number in a good British Telephone book.

you can check with the military branch requesting information under the Freedom of Information Act. make sure you reference this act or you will receive no information. they must reply in a set time period for your request. for more information check out the Freedom of Information Act.

hope this helps
