Christians and Religious people alike won't accept the fact that Atheists don't believe in god vise versa. So, they degrade each other and go into an all out war that will never go anywhere. I have a friend who is a devout Christian and I am an Atheist. She accepts that I don't believe in god and I accept that she does. There is no all out war, no degrading, neither of us try to force our opinions on each other. We accept that we are different from each other. Why are people so unwilling to accept that people are different and that not everyone is going to believe and do what you do?

This is a good question. The answer is actually quite simple: fear. History shows us that people will not hesitate to use their religious beliefs (or lack thereof) as an excuse to oppress other people. It is a power thing. It has happened countless times in every culture over the centuries. With that in mind, it is not that crazy to be concerned that your own religious beliefs (or lack thereof) could easily be taken away from you if enough people believed differently and decided to act against you. Ultimately it is our most base instinct to survive, and indirectly arguing in favor of your beliefs may well be a way of attempting to ensure that your belief system survives, and hence YOU survive. Deep down inside most people are less concerned about what other people believe than they are about losing the right to believe what they believe themselves. This cultivates fear, which cultivates anger, which cultivates insults and arguments.

Doesn't make it right, of course. Tolerance by all people would eliminate fear and bring peace to the world. I admire you for being so tolerant of your friend. I happen to be a Christian with an Atheist, a Muslim, and an Agnostic as my best friends. So I know how you feel. Our way may be better, but when fear is involved, it is hard to convince someone else otherwise. I hope you keep trying!

Any farmer will allow you to understand, that in case you go away a container on my own for a 365 days, you received't see a lot distinct, some weeds and occasional flora convering the floor. yet go away the container on my own for 20 years and this is only no longer a container any extra, there'll be a lot strengthen you received't have the means to stroll via it. go away it for one hundred years and this is going to likely be a woodland or a jungle or a wilderness, besides the undeniable fact that it received't bear any fruit any extra. AuroraDawn seems implying, or a minimum of i'm inferring, that present day society has no longer yielded any fruit from Christianity. That present day society sprang up with cool guidelines like "do not scouse borrow" all by utilizing itself. sparkling Christianity out of a society and set up any guidelines you want, yet in case you imagine the weeds and the thickets received't rush in you're sorely wrong. in case you imagine you are able to get fruit from sand, you had better imagine back because you won't be able to. wish that enables.

I think on an individual level this is not a problem. I know plenty of Christians that don't take issue with my atheism, nor I their Christianity. When groups take sides, and individuals join to a herd mentality, trouble develops. As individuals it's me and you, and we're ok. As groups it's us and them, then you have warfare.

Yes, but you don't go around trying to convert your friend and prove to her she is wrong, and she doesn't go around quoting bible scripture and telling you that you are going to hell for not believing.

I am all for the ideology of live and let live, but when I am insulted, I will defend my position.

I too have many religious family and friends and we all get along fine (I am an atheist), we just leave that area out of our conversations.

That is easy to answer. The human seeks power.......all kinds of power. When someone believes in something.....I mean really believes in something they don't have to try to convince others of their conviction. They already have the power of believing. But. When someone "wants" to believe in something they are always trying to gain power by convincing others to believe it also. There is strength and power in numbers.....Remember!

I accept it. It seems you don't accept that other people have the right to disagree. If you don't want a discussion about your atheism, then quit bringing it up.
