Cheap is a matter of opinion, alot of people would consider the current selling price cheap.
Couple of places to look, ebay, craigslist.com, your local newspaper, your local ebgames or gamestop, are all places I'd look.
I would expect to find one even used, for under $400. Keep in mind alot of us spent $600 for the machine not the current $500, that it's listed at, so some of us have already lost $100.

Get him the Wii. The games are more entertaining and he will get some exercise out of it. With a PS3 (i have one and the games are not that great yet) all he will be is a couch potato. The Wii nailed it, when it comes to fun, and social interaction, because it is even more fun to get your friends involved. The Wii - only $249.99 and games are cheaper too $44.99 on average.
