It depends on the laws of the land. A felony is serious and marks you for life. A misdemeanor is usually over with after a small fine or probation is secured by the prosecutor.

Felony crimes are the most serious and carry the heaviest penalties like murder, rape, burglary, robbery, arson, kidnapping etc.

Misdemeanors are also crimes but lesser in that they are either less violent, have caused less physical damage or have made no physical contact. Harrassment, prank phone calls, spitting at someone, not paying the bus fare, many driving infractions other than alcohol/drug related, petit larceny such as stealing a bunch of candy bars from 711. Each state names their laws a bit differently but they are the same thing. Burglary and breaking and entering are the same thing as are battery and assault.

Here in Massachusetts a felony is any crime which carries MORE than 2.5 years in jail. a Misdemeaner is any crime with less time in jail then a felony.

a misdeaminor is an offend that deals with less fines and jail time and deals with mostly things like traffic ticket and violations . it cannot exceed one year while a felony is major crime that punishment exceeds one year to life in prisonement or sentence to death depending on the crime commited .
