For a good sleep, first you have to determine what is most appropriate and comfortable sleeping posture for you. It differs from person to person. When you wake up, do not move and take a careful mental note of your entire body,i.e.the angle and position of torso, your legs arms and head. Remember it.Now this is the perfect posture for you to start your sleeping from today onwards. While trying to sleep, adopt the 'posture' and pay attention to your breathing. You have to count mentally the numbers from 100 to 1 backwards. For ex. when you exhale ,you say in your mind 100. When exhale the next breath, you should say 99. Like this ,you have to go downwards and should not permit any other thought to enter your mind. If any other thought does enter the mind, you have to restart the counting from 100. By the way, have you tried a cold water bath before going to sleep.?

Don't drink anything a few hours before bed, so you won't have to get up to pee.
Try to read a book or watch something boring on television before bed so you are not wide awake and interested in the world.
Instead of sleeping with ear plugs in, try sleeping with the fan on. My house is TOO QUIET, so I actually NEED some noise to block out the silence, so I sleep with my fan on low, and it lulls me to sleep.
I used melatonin once and it gave me a horrible headache, so don't use that crap anymore! lol
If you do take a pill, take a Tylenol PM, or something like that.
Get your room as dark as you can get it with no light shining in from other rooms.
Cheers and have Good Dreams

I was having difficulty sleeping when going through a stressful time in my life. My doctor suggested rather than sleeping medication to try just simple over the counter Benadryl. It helped tremendously and it's not addictive. You may want to make an appointment with your doctor and tell him/her the trouble you're having and they will suggest what is right for you. Antihistamines like Benadryl normally make people sleepy but in some people can have the opposite effect so you may want to try this on a weekend when you don't have any obligations to see how it effects you. Meditation and deep breathing exercises are also helpful. You must find a way to slow your racing mind.
Here's to healthy restful sleep!
Good luck!

Don't try to turn anything off. Try to get in a comfortable position in bed. Now try breathing to a count which is comfortable for you. Breathe in for a count of five then exhale for a count of five. Continue this pattern with increasing your count if you remain awake for quite a few minutes. Hopefully, you will be concentrating on nothing but your breathing & you will eventually relax enough to fall asleep. Hope this helps. You can always buy an OTC sleep aid to use just for anxious, busy times like this. Sweet dreams.

Whenever i cannot sleep, i watch movies or tv series in my computer. I put the bed really near so that when my mind gets tired from all the information given by the show I'm watching, I fall asleep. But before sleeping totally, i turn off the computer and turn on the radio to my favorite tunes. The last one's just optional but I realized that you have to "tire" your mind and body to stimulate them to rest.
Keeping yourself busy and "sweat-filled" during your wake hours could also be helpful cause it tires your body. I take a shower and brush my teeth before I sleep becuase the feeling of being dirty disturbs my sleep.

Try an all-natural (homeopathic) sleep aid called "Calms Forte" by Hylands. It is sold at Walgreens (if you are in the U.S.). It really does wonders and even controls my restless leg syndrome for the most part.
Calms Forte does not appear to contain parafon forte which is a muscle relaxer. It contains the following.
Passiflora Incarnata HPUS--passion flower
Avena Sativa HPUS--an oat
Humulus Lupulus HPUS--a hop/flower bud (oh oh this appears to be in the cannabinoid family aka marijuana)
Chamomilla HPUS--German chamomile (a flower with relaxing/pain-relieving properties)
Calcarea Phosphorica HPUS--Calcium phosphate
Ferrum Phosphorica HPUS--Iron phosphate
Kali Phosphoricum HPUS--Potassium phosphate (found in bananas and relieves restless leg syndrome)
Natrum Phosphoricum HPUS--Sodium Phosphate
Magnesia Phosphoricum HPUS--Magnesium phosphate
In a Base of Lactose, N.F., Calcium Sulfate, Starch--corn and tapioca
Calcium, iron, potassium, sodium and magnesium occur naturaly in your body and are common supplements. Check out the reviews at the bottom of the web page.

See insomnia treatments, at http://www.ezy-build.net. (.net.nz/~shaneris) on page 3, and practise one of the relaxation techniques on page 2, in bed, after lights out (it helps to achieve proficiency in the waking hours, first!).

I have the same problem.
Bringing down the body temperature sometimes helps for those with active brain. Our brain don't want to go to sleep.
Usually I drop the room temperature or sex. But not both or you will catch a cold.
