Something heavy or Gothic, pref. with some female vocals, dark and atmospheric, catchy songs, oiriginal but also comfortably traditional. Not too much widdling. Nothing boring where all songs sound the same. Double bass drums and some guitar solos. I like bands like Paradise Lost, Within Temptation etc. sort of Gothic Metal.

Pref. clean vocals or mixed instead of constant death/black metal grunting/screaming.

Arch Enemy, the female vocalist is amazing! (Angela Gasgow does not sing more growls..fantastic stuff!!) I would recommend you try them out!! However if you don't want something as brutal, Lacuna Coil are a very good choice. Nightwish are good for beautiful female vocals and is Gothic and atmospheric. Also try a band called Inkubus Sukkabus gothic female vocals and Theatre Des Vampires! - my mothers choice. (My mum has excellent taste in music, I would say I follow my mums tastes in music) You will find all these bands under Metal in HMV. Good Luck choosing Let me know what you decide to buy! :-)

The Project Hate MCMXCIX - Armageddon March Eternal
Death Metal Vox plus a female singer. Alot of double bass. Most of there songs are 8+ minutes long, and they do alot of different things during the course of a song. Very original band.

you may just like Lamb of God's "As the Palaces Burn", unless you would rather have it more on the rock than the metal side

in that case, do Ozzy Osbourne's "Down to Earth" or Black Label Society's "the Blessed Hellride"

actually, Nevermore's "Dead Heart in a Dead World" or "Enemies of Reality" are good picks for a wide range of metallic textures, including some darker gothy stuff...sublimated into devastation, but there nonetheless

Try Echoes of Eternity, Heavy AND Gothic at the same time, with a haunting atmosphere. Francine Boucher, the lead singer, has a beautifully haunting voice.

And they have the Double Bass Drum you're looking for. check them out on wikipedia and their website.

Edit: thought I'd mention that they're currently touring with Edguy, and goning on another tour after that, so you may be able to check them out live soon. (dunno where you're located so I can't help any better than that.
