If older people talk about sex and dirty stuff, and you are younger and do not want them to lose respect for you by joining in and find it disgusting.

And they ask you why you are so quiet and serious, and they go out of their way to try and shock you. What is a polite thing to say, knowing if you join in it will bring your reputation and status down to theirs.

Is it polite to read and ignore them as I have been doing. This is in a work and educational setting at break.

read, do your homework, whatever you want. if they bother you, politely tell them that you are busy. otherwise, feel free to ignore them. if you are at work and they become really offensive, you can report it to the human resources person or a manager.

It's okay to ignore them.
It also might be right to let them know that you don't appreciate hearing them talk like that and that is the reason you are quiet and serious.
It's not wrong to be upfront with people, especially when they ask.
They are being rude to discuss it in front of you that way, and so it is not rude for you to answer them.

ignore them especially if its guys , they might be doing it just to see your reaction

i would never join in a conversation that i was not comfortable with

strangely i have a similiar problem , but with me its an older woman , and i mean older , i am 47 and no prude , but the way this woman talks in open company i find shocking

i pretend to not hear her , and read my paper , so i guess we are alike

all the best

You are handling it in the most diplomatic way.
Be busy.
Ignore them if possible. If not just tell them that you are not comfortable with the conversation and have nothing to add to it!

I would continue to ignore them and not give them the satisfaction of seeing my reaction to their conversations.
