He obviously has no clue as to what water does in the body. It's a universal solvent. What that means is that it's a critical element in the blood which is necessary in order to carry nutrients to the muscles and carry away waste products. The more you exercise, the more important it is to keep these things moving. As to how much, that would depend on how much you weigh, how hard you work, and how much you sweat. You could lose as much as a gallon during a good workout. In an average workout, though, you should consider about four cups per hour.

Water helps to keep you hydrated, which helps with muscle cramping, kidney function, etc. As to how much, you should drink at least 6-8 glasses (8 ounces) a day, more when you are working out.

Whether you exercise or not you still need water. It's makes you feel better and more energetic to hydrate your body, muscles, tissues, etc. It just feels good to drink water.
How much do you need? 64oz(half gallon)-128oz (1 gallon) of water per day. Some people can't get a full gallon in their schedule, so if you are one of those people, then try your best to get in a half gallon (64 oz).
Cheers and enjoy a big glass of ice cold water! :-)

water is important in everyday life, not just for working out. you should drink 6-8 glasses of water every day regardless of whether you work out or not. it will keep your body hydrated. if you are dehydrated you are more likely to have muscle cramps while working out.

Muscle is mostly WATER,just like your body ,but so is skim milk, chicken, beef, almost everything is mostly water so while drinking plenty of water to stay hydrated is good if you choose to get your water from other sources, thats fine too, water is just a pure form.
