We have conflicts. We are attracted to the love of God (because He made us) and simultaneously repelled by the idea of a moral authority who is always watching and judging us.
We can't have both the love of God and independence from God. We choose one or the other and then find evidence that supports our choice which was not based on evidence at all.

"If we try and trust in God we are told he will love us" I didn't have to try or trust in my parents for them to love me... I didn't have to do anything at all in order to gain love from them, it was already there. There is nothing positive about "I love you... love me or spend eternity in torment" That doesn't offer hope either way you go with it...
As for your quote "to give every man according as his work shall be".... too often we are told you are punished for the bad things, but you can do all the good in the world and it doesn't matter one lick, unless you believe.
My thoughts on this is Christianity as a whole needs to figure out exactly what that "Good News" is, because to most people who aren't Christian... well, all we see is a bunch of people reading one book and the "Good News" changes with each person. I don't see a group that is united... I see a house that is divided so many times that some of the people living there don't even know which room they are in, yet it is those people who are trying to tell me where the kitchen is.

How can a book written by superstitious, self-serving people over 2000 years ago provide hope in the modern age?

Well as free thinking i have many other opinions, i do not need to rely on a book for comfort.
Now lets get to love with neighbors and all, everybody in the world is a neighbor, so how do you explain the slaughter of native Americans from CHRISTIANS, how about the use of slaves from CHRISTIANS, how about the murder of innocent Muslims from CHRISTIANS, or what about CHRISTIANS killings CHRISTIANS, just a few signs of love eh? your history is full of murder.
IS THIS WHAT YOU CALL LOVE AND HARMONY?

Because it doesn't work for everyone. Some believe in religion, others money, others fairies. We're all different, sorry that sounded like a line out of the Life Of Brian!

Because it's obviously false.
If you don't require your "hope" to come from a true source, you've got a LOT of other options, most of which don't require you to act as glassy-eyed.

There r numerous ways. People have their preference according to their inbuilt nature.
People who impose on people to follow only one particular way r ignorant themselves.

The tone of your question implies that those with a mental disorder should be ripe for indoctrination.
How controlling can you get.

Could it be that the messages come with too many strings?
There are lots of positive messages that don't come with:
1. Requests for money
2. Demands for obedience
3. Cruelty to denigrated groups.
Keep your messages, please.
