I'm a volunteer. I've been volunteering for 14 years! I started when I was in jr. high because my parents are big advocates of giving back to the community. I was raised to donate my time and money to those who need it since I've been so lucky in my life. Every cause is worthy - poverty, health, environment, etc.
I've volunteered at least once a week since I started. I've volunteered in a surgical hospital, a children's hospital, three different soup kitchens, various weekend events for different charities (runs, dragon boat races, etc), Christmas events (like toy drives), etc. I've also done international volunteer work.
I continue to volunteer even after moving out of my parents' home because I was raised in an upper class family and knew growing up how lucky I was compared to other people. I had a chance for a great education, and once I graduated I got an excellent job right away. I have a nice car, a nice home, lots of nice things, a healthy family, lots of opportunity to travel and see the world, etc.
Honestly, I feel GUILTY when I'm not giving back and when I'm only living for me.

I have been volunteering for 10 years at a Community Centre in a low socio-economic area in australia... for most of this time i was volunteering 5 hours a day, 4 days a week, doing all sorts... mainly manangement type of stuff, event organising, portfolio managing. i actually only resigned from this 3 weeks ago... i'm also at uni, and have just gone full time, and couldnt do it all and try and look after the kids! i'm still involved there though, and will help out at special events

Yes, I am currently a humanatarian in Romania. I teach part time a mission school here and the other days I help out at the local Children's Hospital/Orphanage holding, feeding, rocking and changing abandoned or sick babies. I am hoping to begin helping out taking the children back to the gypsy villages when they are released, it is hard most of the parents are not happy when the kids are returned. Infact most of the children are brought in for colds and left for weeks because they are unwanted.. Somedays a volenteer is the only person to hold them that day. It is sad that when doing so you do not know their names or even if they are boys or girls...no charts or Id braclets. When you feed them it is a small cup of mashed potatos and a spoonful of ground meat or soup which is really water with bread soaked in it.. Most of the children are still hungry when they get done eating. Plus then quite a few are hooked up to Iv's and tied to the beds to stop them from pulling the IV's out...tied up with shoestrings, scarves, whatever..It makes you cry... there is to much for any person or group to fix alone...to anyone who wants to help email me...

I have helped riding for the disabled for over three years now. I get so much reward from helping these children learn to ride I can not imagine not doing it. It seems selfish that I get so much pleasure! I help once a week for an afternoon.

If I had the transportation, I'd love to volunteer are a local senior citizen center, or hospital. It's in my nature to do so.
Cheers
