Some bikes come with them standard others don't. Just bought a specialized hardrock sport and it didn't come with one but my other bike has one. Just a round bit of plastic that slides over the pedal and screws to the chainring. It stops trousers and jeans and anything else getting ripped to shreds. What are they called?

Chain Guard? Sounds pretty obvious lol. Feel a bit stupid now. Anyone know where I can get one in UK? Searching yahoo for them is a nightmare. Thanks.

The CTC shop has two listed. You don't have to be a member. Put "chain guard" in the serach box.

Edinburgh Cycle Co-op also has some stuff.

I've bought from both of them myself in the past, but not a chain guard - I'm a commuter/roadie.

As well as chain guards, cycle shops used to sell bar clips for ladies in skirts to secure them to the bar if they were riding a bike with one! Aka, "a man's bike" .
It was in the days of circular skirts (6 yards around the hem - boy did that take some hemming!), plus several petticoats starched with sugar water, and we would be seen riding down the streets looking like ships under full sail!
I believe that chain guards were developed specifically for the safety of ladies wearing long skirts. You see Victorian photographs with them in place.

Seriously, you need to be wearing cycle clips around your trousers. Flapping fabric can catch in ANY bit of the mechanism, guarded or not, and it's freaking dangerous when it happens. It happened to me and I was lucky; you might not be. So buy some cycle clips! I know they are uncool but they save you from getting damaged :-)
