I have an 1100 square foot home and am quite pragmatic, I have 3 small dogs, one of whom doesn't seem to train well for potty training, I am sick with M.E and can't do things the normal way due to stress intolerance, and I'd like to get a floor that is not carpet that I can throw cheap rugs or carpet pieces on, but linoleum is expensive and i am broke, but there must be a way to to go something like linoleum that doesn't aborb dog pee. I don't care about looks, only survival here and please,no lectures on training dogs, I've had dogs all my life and I just need an answer to can this be done and cheaply

Unfortunately out of all flooring options, limoleum, or vinyl is the cheapest. If your home's foundation is a concrete slab as opposed to pier and beam (most are slab foundations in the south if the house was built after 1960's) then an option would be to pull up all the carpet and pad, as well as take up all the carpet tack strips around the parameter of the room and then seal your concrete with polyurethane. This is actually a very popular modern look nowadays. Of course the way most people are doing it is by either staining or acid etching the cement to get rich color before applying the top coat of polyurethane, but this is pretty expensive and unless you are really handy, should only be done by professionals. However, since you are trying to save money and are looking for the best floor for your situation for strickly utilitarian purposes, you can skip the expensive coloration step and just apply the top coat. I'd do one room at a time so it won't be too overwhelming. Any home improvement store like H.D. or Lowe's can explain more and sell you the materials. This would still be a much cheaper option that peel and press vinyl tiles - they are almost and in some cases more expensive than sheet linoleum. Good luck

If you have concrete under your lineoleum or carpet as I do then seal the concrete, buy the neat stuff you can use on your garage floor and voila. I sure can not afford lineoleum either and that is my best bet. You can also just seal then paint the floor with a tough paint. A Home Depot place can tell you what they think is best.

Lipstickit2me has the best answer by far!

One problem with the peel & stick is that you still have the seams between the tiles. Urine and diarrhea can still seep into the seams. Urk.

Polished and urathaned concrete looks cool, and is definately your least expensive option. If your underlayment is wood, then you do approximately the same thing, polish (sanding) and multiple coats of polyurathane.

Excellent advice Lipstickit2me! You got my vote.

The cheapest alternative is the peel and press tiles. You can find them on slae many times at all the big home improvement stores.
You will still have to get the flooring clean and if there is already carpet down it will have to be removed. There is no easy way to do this put the peel and press tiles are the easiest and cheapest way to go.

Pull up the carpet and paint the floorboards. It is quite a common thing in older farm houses. And it can be beautiful. Just use a highgloss, easy to clean paint.

You could try end of roll offcuts. Usually much cheaper than buying large amounts. You could use the rugs to hide any seems.

I have MS. I know the stress factor thing.
