Soap and water will disinfect the silverware; for the drawer and other things that are porous, put a tablespoon of bleach in a gallon of water and wipe down with that. Bleach is very effective.
If you have a mouse in the house, you probably have more. If you can find out where the mouse got in, you can close the hole.
Snap traps are quite effective at killing mice. Poison isn't so great because if a mouse eats it and leaves the house, a cat or owl could eat it and be poisoned. My favorite trap for killing mice is the kind that electrocutes the mouse using batteries. It's quick, humane, not messy, and you can just dump out the mouse, replace the bait, and set it again. You can also get live traps and release the mice outside, but don't release them too close to the house or they will come back. You can get any these traps at a hardware store.
But, unless you plug the entry hole(s) or get a cat, more mice will come in.

When we had mice due to living near horse stables, I purchased at least a dozen standard traps - and when I caught the hapless mice I simply threw the mouse and trap away. There was no way I was going to get mouse brains on me!
We used tinned dog food on the traps and this worked well.
Make sure you discard any foods which are not in containers. After our experience I went berserk buying plastic containers - the Tupperware lady still sends up Xmas cards :-) Just the thought that a mouse could have defaecated in our cereal or pasta made me feel ill.
As for disinfecting the silverware - wash as normal and then clean with silver cleaner - seriously that stuff is really caustic - so no germ would dare survive.
Hope you solve your rodent invasion soon,

Hi,
I had this problem when I moved into my flat. The best advice I can give to you is to make sure all cereals and open food is put away in plastic containers. Then sweep the floor regularly and make sure there are no crumbs on the work surfaces.
Next you can go buy some old fashioned wooden spring traps from a hardware store, they are really cheap and I found the best bait was in fact chocolate covered peanuts or any chocolate covered nut. I placed the traps next to items such as one on either side of my cooker etc as apparently mice like to run along side a wall or surface. If you have any gaps in wall etc you can use a mastic gun to fill, but mix with wire wool as the mice can't chew through it. Do not use poison as I have experienced, they will die in the most inconvenient places like under the fridge freezer and start smelling real bad!!
Hope this helps!!
Good Luck

First off, don't freak out. Everything will be fine. Simple washing in your dishwasher w/detergent will disinfect your silverware and it won't harm it like bleach may. Vinegar is a natural sanitizer as well.
Go to any pest control and ask about humane mice traps. I am listing a site for you to check out before you enquire so you have an idea of what your dealing with.
Just remember that the mouse is probably just looking for food and will not harm you. And last I checked, there is no bubonic plague in this country. Good Luck.

Oh ye ole dreaded mouse, I get them in the winter. Set up traps baited with peanut butter, or go buy the sticky glue traps
at the store. Try to get a handle on the mouse now or you will have many. They breed very fast.....put all crackers cereal bread etc. where the mouse cant get to them, also dont leave a messy kitchen, or you will find poops every where.
Good luck....

get a mouse trap
get a peice of wool and tie it around the part where you stick the food and rub the wool with peanut butter or the oil you have cooked some meat in ,that way the sneaky little thing can't just steal the food off the trap and run so you know you will catch it. after you have caught it keep reseting the trap for about a week, cause where there is one theres more.

This is what happens when you bait a mouse trap with peanut butter.

Also, if there is a way for him to get to a window, leave it cracked about 1 inch and he will leave on his own.
