I agree with the Unibond suggestion. Paint that on (doesn't matter that you have already painted), give it two coats then a good thick emulsion. Tip*** try gloss first over tricky stains then emulsion over the top of that when its dry. No more stains!

If the leak has stopped, all you need to do is give it another coat of undercoat, or more top coats, until the stain is covered. It will only then reappear if the water is still ingressing.

There is a paint called "Stainblock" which is specifically formulated for this type of problem.

Ask for it at your paint store, in comes in small (1/2 litre or so) tins, because you only paint over the stain affected part.

I've only seen it in white, but I don't think the colour matters, as it's not a finish paint, you're supposed to paint your normal paint over it.

Unibond! You can buy it from any DIY shop - B&Q Homebase, Wicks. A coat of unibond first will stop the stain coming through. Then use a good quality emulsion of your choice. Good luck!

Coat stain with shellac primer, Zinsser B-I-N stain killer.
"moss " got it completely wrong, it will NEVER cover the stain.
LATER
These people using unibond are wrong, it is water based and WILL still show stain.
According to decorating experts, GLOSS is NEVER put on a ceiling
Stay away from oil based stick to SHELLAC based.
