Killing an animal out of mercy is only right when that animal is sick or very old and in pain. It's not right to do it just because shelters become overcrowded. Deciding which animal is to be killed and which one isn't is like playing a kind of lottery with their lives. And that is NEVER right, all animals, young or old, cute or less cute, should have the same chances. A solution would be to stop taking them into shelters, and just take some food, once a day, to the place where they usually live. Then, when some of the animals in the shelter get adopted, the new ones can be brought in....

There are so many animals out there that don't have homes.
It is more humane to put them down then let them get run over or if it is a cat let a dog maul it to death!! We have to speak loudly for spaying and neutering of pets. It is more inhumane to let that a female dog or cat outside in heat knowing full well it will most likely will become pregnant. Humans have to be the one more responsible we are supposed to be the ones that has a bigger brain!!!

When an animal has reached the point of living in constant pain it is nothing but right to gently put him to rest. I can't imagine letting my pets suffer when I could give them peace and end their hurt. Animals who are put to rest due to homelessness is sad thing but when you consider their options (starvation, abuse, freezing, etc) it is kinder to end their misery as well. For this reason, it is so important to spay or neuter your pet so more don't come into the world just to be taken out of it again.

These are such great answers! The problem is not the vets, but the people who got the animals in this situation in the first place.
This question is the very reason why people should NEUTER THEIR CATS!

What else are they going to do with them? are you going to take them? Its because fools go and get pets that they cant take care of and then dump them, they end up at the vet, and then it gets overcrowded. It happens way too much. Unfortunately its a neccesary evil.

if an animal is in pain, and there is no hope, why would you want to see it living that way.strays become strays because ignorant poeple allow it. they are the sole cause and no animal should be made to suffer

I think it's right. However, it's the people who either abandon their animals or who are too irresponsible to get them spayed or neutered that deserve to be "put down."
