Well London Boi, think hard before you go taking the intellectual and artisitic property of tribal people.
Even for some of those descended from tribal backgrounds it is not the done thing (or sure as hell shouldnt be) to just go out and take a pattern (lets talk Maori in this case, and say moko) and just go "I want this tattooed on".
These are stories in ink of lineage and respect, mana, personal position in whanau, Iwi and Rohe.
Instead just choose a nice stylised 'tribal looking' tattoo from one of the sites on the Net, go to a good tattooist and get it done.
Honestly.
I know it sounds a wee bit precious, but say you had an ancestor (or if you were of Maori descent, Tipuna) who designed a great version of your union jack, and that it had significant and important meaning to your position in the world in some ways no matter how small the daily impact, and even you wouldnt dare to wear any of these significant designs on your body without being told by someone older and with more standing that you deserved to be allowed to do this and had earned the right, and then one day you turned round and saw that half the frigging world was sporting it (and lets face it hasnt the union jack been ripped off to buggery many times over) - well wouldnt you just roll your eyes a bit and think Jeeeeesus. Might be nice if they could even explain the meaning behind it!!
Anyhow your choice.
By the way are you descended at all from tangata whenua?

As far as I know, there is no specific meaning for tribal tattoo designs (assuming you're talking about the modern style, not traditional ethnic tattoos). It's just a decorative style - frankly, one getting a trifle unfashionable now - that makes particular use of the contrast between curved motifs and untattooed skin. Many motifs with a meaning, however, can be modified to a tribal design: for instance, the "tribal thistle" that combines Scottish/Celtic elements with a tribal style.

my response to you is WHAT TRIBE ARE YOU FROM, AND HOW DID YOU EARN THAT TATTOO! I don't think everyone should run out and get a tribal tattoo cause it look's cool it really does mean something to these people and they have to earn the right to wear them! sorry if you are offended but that is my opinion

they have meaning to the tribes that have them. they have ABSOLUTELY no meaning to you and me which is why i think that it is so freaking ridiculous how many people get tribal tattoos. you aren't part of any tribe, so it kindof makes you a poser right?
their tattoos probably have to do with coming of age and surviving the tribal life, of ancesters past, symbols of being warriors... none of which has anything to do with you.

i always advocate against getting tribal tattoos unless you are actually from an ancestry of people with a history in tribal tattoos and you have examples of those tattoos of your ancesters. things that will be strong cultural ties. it just seems silly to do so otherwise.
