It depends on the state where you live, but in general yes, you are not an adult, you would have to get emancipated.

Most places will not rent to you, you do not have the legal right to enter contracts until you are 18.

Good luck.

It is hard but the best thing you can do is talk to them and offer to help find somewhere for them to live and then keep communication open - there is a big chance they will want to come home again once the novelty of coping on their own wears off. Tell them why you don't want them to go and try to be calm and treat them as the adult they obviously think they are - don't use sarcasm or be alarmist. 16 year olds grow up as quickly as they seemed to when they were 2 and in 6 months time you should have a different young person to deal with and one who respects you for respecting their choices - you don't have to agree with them but your support will be valued. Parenting teenagers is probably the hardest leg of the job, good luck.

In the united states if they are 16 they have to be emancipated before they can move away BUT in order to have the minor move back home if the minor is in a rental agreement the adult has to take the minor to court and state the minor does not have the ability to live sucessfully. if the minor is 17 tho there isn't much the adult can do because they will be 18 before anything can be done. Let them go, if they come back crying, chalk it all up to learning a good lesson I lived in Illinois in the US

No I'm afraid there isn't. I moved out at 16, my parents gave up trying to stop me and instead helped. Rather than resenting them I was I thankful and when it all went pear shaped I was able to ask for help and come home with (what I felt) dignity. They never once said I told you so. When I left the second time it was because I was ready and knew I had their backing.
It isn't easy but Good Luck.

not in england a parent has no rights even at 15 the police and social services wont do anything about runaways unless the 15 year old is in an unsafe enviroment, so a 16 year old can go where he or she pleases

If you are in the UK, there is nothing you can do to stop it.

And the way you worded that indicates you are rather controlling of your child. I may be wrong, and im certainly not being judgemental, but I would have to ask WHY my 16 year old was so keen to do their own washing, ironing, cooking, housekeeping etc.....

the legal age of adulthood is 18.. and thats anywhere in the US..... up untill that age they can be considered a runaway and the police can put them into juvie or a foster home... depending on the case. you can call your local social service office and make an appointment with a counselor and discuss your options. they can give you the best advise because they know the laws of your county and they can give you the best options for your situation. good luck

Maybe you should be a better parent so that your 16 year old doesn't want to move out.

Otherwise just let them go, you don't really have any right to stop someone living their life, even your child.

In Britain No. Please try and part on good terms so it will make it easier for the child to return or get in touch if or when it all goes wrong and they need to return home or need help. Pride can be a very bad thing for the child if they need you but don't want to loose face or admit you were right.
