Find something to distract yourself until it heals- a action-based computer game like starcraft, or anything else you find interesting.

If your back was injured in a car accident isn't it covered by your insurance? if so, don't they have someplace to send you?
I would start with my primary physician first, he'll probably want to take X-Rays then maybe MRI's to see what's going on. They'll be read by a radiologist who'll then give his diagnosis and his advise as who you should see. You may have more going on in there then meets the eye.
Take whatever advice they give you, with the fact that this was from an accident and with that in mind, see whom ever you need to see to correct your situation.
You may even need to see an orthopedic surgeon to have surgery correct the situation.
In the meantime you can use ice packs to see if that helps, the will sometime take any swelling down and ease pain. I can't tell you what to take but, seeing your primary, he can give you something.

Well I injured my back working as a CNA 8yrs ago. I now see a pain management MD every 6 weeks. I take a great medication called Ultram ER. After the first few doses, there aren't anymore side effects(drugged feeling). every few months, when I feel that I need it, my MD gives me a pain block injection in my sacroiliac joints( i.e. tail bone area, buttocks also). It's a steroid that blocks the pain for several months. This medication along with moderate exercise keeps me walking and able to keep up with my kids.
